Quarter 4

Welcome to Quarter 4!

Wow! What a year this has been. As we finish up the last 35 (!) days of school, I am struck with gratitude for how far we have come from the fall. I feel so much hope and am grateful for scientists who are making it possible for us to spend time, once more, with our dear families. It is my fervent hope that we will start the 2021-22 school year face-to-face for all.

Class of 2021 Stole Ceremony

Save the date for May 20 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. We will host our annual stole ceremony in the Plano East gym. We will not celebrate with food and drink but are so looking forward to an evening of celebration and well-wishes for our beloved Class of 2021 who are successfully navigating the end of the school year.

The stole represents the successful completion of IB diploma requirements including all internal assessments, CAS, TOK, and the EE.

Please RSVP through Evite if you have not already done so.

Seniors, please complete the stole ceremony card (provided on MB) and use the ManageBac calendar dropbox due April 23.

Class of 2021 and 2022 Virtual IB Banquet

Join us on the evening of May 22, 2021, for our virtual IBSSA banquet. Seniors, check out ManageBac and submit your baby photos and memories as soon as possible so that we can get to work on this night to remember which will include a Senior Slide Show, IB student and teacher superlatives, and guest appearances by some of your favorite teachers. Stay tuned for invitations and additional information!

Class of 2022: Extended Essay Summer Camp

All juniors are formally invited to attend our 2nd annual Extended Essay Summer Camp on June 1-4!

The goal of this remote learning camp is for students to complete their extended essays with the assistance of knowledgeable IB teachers.

The extended essay is due on the first day of senior year, but when students attend this camp and complete the daily assignments, they will free up their summer for other pursuits.

Students interested in attending should sign up using this Google form on or before May 1: https://forms.gle/s6RUZ9dkHa2Fn8vn8

Class of 2022 and 2023: Leadership Conference Opportunity

Recruitment has begun for this summer’s Youth Leadership Conferences sponsored by the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW). Information can be found at http://moww-regionviii.org/ylc.html, which includes a video of prior Plano East student, Daniel Jungerman, who attended the conference in 2019. Attached is an information brochure.

Purpose: To teach high school students the fundamentals of Leadership, Americanism, Patriotism and the American Free Enterprise and Judicial systems, the fundamentals of citizenship. The conferences provide excellent speakers, workshops, networking with their peers from across the state and are a memorable experience for the high school students. Over 350 students are selected annually to attend these conferences, with awards presented to the Outstanding Student at each conference. The expectation is that the students will return to their high schools with a better understanding of what a leader truly is, how they lead effectively and impart that knowledge to their peers.

Who: Current sophomores and juniors. Although the conference is sponsored by prior military officers and their family members, the student does not need to be in ROTC or have any aspirations for military service.

When and Where: Selection of a course will be made on a first come, first serve basis. A student may choose any option as long as there is still availability.

7-10 June 2021 Oklahoma Christian University, Edmond, Oklahoma

27 June-1 July 2021 Schreiner University, Kerrville, Texas

18-22 July 2021 Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas

24-28 July 2021 Schreiner University, Kerrville, Texas

There is no cost for the conference with meals and lodging included. Parents provide transportation to and from the conference.

**All the mandated COVID-19 precautions and protections required by Texas, Oklahoma and the host Universities will be observed.

To apply for the conference, the student should submit a resume to Barbara Butcher, mightymathmama@gmail.com. A follow-up interview will be scheduled for either in person or virtual.

Class of 2022 and 2023: IB Exams and fees

Can you believe that we are already thinking ahead to exam registration? We are making a change in our finances for the fall, however: In the past, we have had first payment due in October and final payment due in February.

Because billing requirements have changed, we will now ask for a first payment by September 15 and payment in full by November 15. Please plan ahead for this change: each IB exam is $119. Typically juniors take 1-2 exams, and seniors take between 4-6.

Virtual College Fair

In an ordinary year, we would attend the TIBS college fair in Hurst, but this year it's online: https://texasibcollegefair.com/

Please feel free to peruse the different colleges -- and Class of 2024 and 2023: save the date for April 28, 2022, when we can hopefully attend in person!

Class of 2022: CAS

As we head into summer, remember that CAS is a requirement throughout the year! Your 4th Key Experience due on May 17 needs to focus on a CAS learning outcome that you haven't yet tackled, so start planning now if you haven't already, and then look ahead to summer for trying new things and being intentional about what you do.
