Tips from Dr. Nancy Ulschmid, School Psychologist:
More tips on using books to foster social emotional learning.
We know from last month’s Newsletter that Orchard Lane has a large selection of books in our Parent’s section in the library that focus directly on helping parents and kids develop healthy Social-Emotional skills. Did you know that you can also teach your child important information about emotions, social skills and problem solving while reading just about any fiction book with your child. Whether you are reading aloud to your child, taking turns reading with your child, having your child read aloud to you, or for older children…each of you reading the same book separately, take the time to pause throughout the book to ask questions about how different characters might be feeling, ask how the child might feel if in a similar situation, share how you might feel, and get or share opinions about the problem and the ways characters are attempting to solve those problems. Discuss if the problem was successfully resolved and, if not, ask your child about other possible actions to solve the problem. By including these small lessons into your day-to-day interactions with your child, you can help teach them important skills during interaction times that are both relaxed and comfortable.
Possible questions/statements to use during reading:
How do you think that character is feeling?
How would you feel if you were in that situation?
I think I might feel…
What do you think s(he) could do to feel better (or solve his/her problem)?
I’m wondering if this might work…., what do you think?
What would you do differently?Nancy Ulschmid, Ph.D

A note from our school psychologist, Dr. Nancy Ulschmid -
Did you know......that OL has a collection of books to help parents (and teachers), and student's themselves enhance social-emotional functioning? I started the collection a number of years ago using funds provided by the PFC (thank you!) and other school funds and we currently have 70 books in our collection! The books are bar-coded in the Parents section and include informational books for parents about various social/emotional/behavioral concerns, books for kids to read about characters who have similar problems/issues to solve, as well as, Self-help books for kids. If you are interested in exploring our collection I can help you choose the most appropriate book for you and your child. Books are checked out in the student's name, but please know that checking out one of these books will not affect your student's book limit.
I am always on the look-out for new book titles, so if you have read a book that you thought was particularly helpful, please let me know!
If you are interested in exploring our book collection or have a great book in mind that you think would be a good addition to our collection, please reach out to me at: nancy.ulschmid@nbexcellence.org or 262 789-6513
