21th Week of School 1/18-1/22
Physical Science
1.) What will students learn: This week your student will demonstrate their understanding of the concepts taught throughout the energy unit. Concepts include Potential v. Kinetic Energy, Energy Forms, Energy Transformations, and the Law of Conservation of Energy.
2.) Practice Assignment:
- Unit 3 Study Guide (answer key will be placed in the handout section of TEAMS class notebook on Wednesday Night)
3.) Graded Assignment: Unit 3 Energy and It's Transformation Assessment (Friday 1/22)
4.) If your student passes the test, he /she will begin preparing for Unit 4: Waves.
5.) If your student does not pass the test, he/she will need to attend office hours for remediation.
Georgia Studies
1.) What will students learn: Evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia during the New South Era.
2.) Practice Assignment:
- Gallopade Clickbooks: 19.1/ 19.2 /1 9.3
3.) Graded Assignment:
- Weekly Illuminate Test
4.) If your student passes the test, he /she will:
- Analyze Georgia’s participation in important events that occurred from World War I through the Great Depression.
5.) If you student does not pass the test, he/she will:

English Language Arts
Focus Standards for the week
ELAGSE8RI5: Students will read an informational text and analyze the role of particular sentences in understanding key ideas in the text.
ELAGSE8RI9: Students will read two informational texts about the same topic and examine where the two texts disagree on ideas.
Practice Platforms/ Key Assignments (Formative-Non-Graded)
Analyzing Role of Particular Sentences in Texts Teacher-Led Lesson (Standard 8RI5)-Tuesday: Students will read paired text on concussions in sports-Concussion: More than “Getting Your Bell Rung” and Many Hits, Rather than a Big One, Pose Greatest Concussion Risk. As students read each text, they will pull out the author’s main points and analyze which lines from the text helped refine these ideas.
Analyzing Conflicting Viewpoints in Texts Teacher-Led Lesson (Standard 8RI9)-Wednesday: Teacher will model using the paired text set Was it a Fluke. Teacher will model how to use a graphic organizer to analyze how the two texts differ in ideas. Students will follow along with teacher as she models, thereby creating a model for their reference.
Analyzing Conflicting Viewpoints in Texts (Standard 8RI9)-Thursday: Students will read paired text set on school sports- Should your School get Rid of Sports. While reading texts, students will use a graphic organizer to examine how the two articles differ in ideas. Students will complete this task as modeled from Wednesday.
Weekly Test (Summative- Graded)
Weekly Test (Standards 8RI5 & 8RI9): Friday: This test will be given over the course of 45 minutes. This test has 6 multiple choice questions.
Next Steps
Students will read the complex text On Drought Conditions by FDR to continue examining the role of particular sentences in texts that help refine an author’s key points.
Remediation
Teacher will provide students with additional help by providing additional mini lessons of the concepts used during practice.
Math
1.) What will students learn:
This week your student will learn to compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions).. MGSE8.F.2

Algebra I
We have started Unit 4 in Algebra 1. This week, we will cover the following standards: CED.1; F.BF.1; F.IF.1; F.IF.2. Students will be expected to understand what a function is, write a function describing the relationships between two quantities, and evaluate functions.
Students are encouraged to complete all practice problems daily to be prepared for our weekly assessment. If students do not understand, they should attend my office hours for assistance.
Additionally, to prepare for the end of course test, students will have a practice assessment on USA Test Prep weekly. Please encourage your child to complete it. We will discuss any challenging questions during class.
