JANUARY 2023
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year! Wow, I can’t believe that it is already 2023. I truly hope that you and your family had a wonderful winter break and had time to rest, relax, and enjoy family. December was a whirlwind of a month with holiday shows, field trips, Winter Wonderland Shop, exciting classroom activities, leadership clubs, and FIELD DAY! Thank you to all that helped make these events possible for our students. Each one helps to create life-long memories for our students.
As we move into January, we will finish up the 2nd quarter of the school year. Please review the January calendar below as we will have an ERD on January 12th, followed by no school on both the 13th and 16th. Progress Reports will come home towards the end of January. Any questions regarding your child’s Progress Reports please reach out to their teacher. Also, please review Mrs. Riashi’s message below as it outlines upcoming quarter benchmark testing and state level FASTT PM 2 testing.
We look forward to welcoming the students back to school and getting into our routines once again. January is always a great time for our teachers to reteach expectations both in and outside of the classroom and set some new goals!
Looking forward to another exciting month ahead. Thank you to all parents and family members for supporting your children at home. We appreciate your support and feel incredibly lucky to work with each and every child.
Thank you!

Toys from home: I’m sure students have new toys they have gotten over the holidays. Please make sure their toys stay safe at home and don’t find their way into their backpack! Safety is a priority at TBE. Please check and clean out backpacks to make sure your child is not bringing toys to school that can be a distraction. Toys, Pokémon or other trading cards, pop its, or items that are a distraction will be collected and parents are free to come and pick them up in the front office.
Attendance-
Please refer to the CCPS academic calendar when planning vacations and appointments as much as possible. Vacation days are not excused absences and students miss valuable instruction by the teacher on the days they are not in school. A doctor note excusing an absence must be turned in to the school office within 24 hours of the student returning to school to be marked excused in the computer. Parents will receive a letter in the mail when the student has excessive absences whether they are excused or not. Habitual absences are monitored by the County Attendance Officer and may result in Truancy Court. Students who have been approved for Out-of-Zone permission to attend Tommie Barfield may have their permission revoked if they accumulate excessive absences and/or tardies and/or early pick-ups from school. Students are recognized quarterly and annually for perfect attendance.
Please follow call 377-8500 to report your child’s absence each day your child is absent. Calling the school will validate the absence so your child will not have an UNEXCUSED absence on their record.
Arrival and Dismissal- Please review these arrival and dismissal procedures to keep all our students safe. Adult supervision starts at 7:45 in the morning. and our WTBE News starts @ 8:15! Dismissal begins at 2:50 p.m. For the safety of our students, please have your car rider sign visible and remember that the car line is a No Cell Phone Zone. Thank you for helping us greet and dismiss our students safely every day!

FIRST GRADE NEWS
In reading, we have been working on Module 5. It is called Now You See It, Now You Do not. The stories have to do with sources of light and dark and the many sources of light. We are exploring blends, compound words, and adding ed to the ends of words. As we move into module 6, we will be celebrating America and learning about different holidays and symbols.
In unit 7 in math, Meanings of Addition, we are learning how to write equations to solve addition word problems. You will hear your child use the terms: part, part, whole when referring to addition problems and finding a missing addend or sum. We are working to solve problems when the result is unknown and when both addends are unknown. Remember to keep working on memorizing addition facts.
As we begin a new year, remember to encourage your child to work to be the very best by following the seven habits. These lessons will help your child to be a great person in and out of school.

SECOND GRADE NEWS
Second Grade had a super busy December month!
Mrs. Biondi and Ms. Morell’s class practiced and performed a Holiday Performance at San Marco Church for a Ladies Luncheon, and the entire Second Grade performed a Holiday Show for our parents.
In Science the students were able to examine different types of rocks and soil to learn what Earth is made up of and in Social Studies we completed the studies of using maps and globes to locate various places from our hometown to all-around North America.
During Reading we are finished Lead the Way Module. During this module we learned about who our government leaders are and various famous people like Wilma Rudolph and Thomas Edison. It is shocking that the first semester has ended and now we are looking at the last half of this year!
Please have your students keep reading at night and practicing their math facts.

THIRD GRADE NEWS
As the second quarter comes to an end, our third graders have continued to do great things!
The students continue to use their math facts in class each day. Our multiplication songs are a foundation for the learning of multiplication and division. Please encourage your child to continue practicing and singing their songs at home or using flashcards. We started learning about representing fractions in Math. The students will order and compare fractions and identify equivalent fractions throughout this next unit.
In Reading, our students have been working on literary elements, author’s voice, theme, and studying the structure of literature, which includes stories, poems, and plays. In Writing, students are working to improve their opinion writing. Students just finished writing about why they are a good friend. In Science, the students have been focusing on comparing materials and objects according to their properties. In Social Studies, we are learning about maps and labeling the continents and oceans. We also learned about Martin Luther King and his contributions to our country.
Please continue to read with your child every night and practice their math facts. We appreciate your support and all that you do for our students! We hope your families had a wonderful holiday season.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS
Welcome back to everyone and Happy New Year. We hope everyone had a relaxing and safe winter break. As we are “keeping the end in mind” with starting a new year we plan to stay focused on growing, learning, and working hard to continue to accomplish our goals and make this a successful new year.
At the end of December, we wrapped up our units on Minerals and Rocks and Weathering and Erosion. Students were able to investigate and classify both rocks and minerals by their properties and further exam the differences between weathering and erosion. We will be moving into our unit on Earth’s rotation, revolution, and the phases of the moon, which always is a favorite with our kids!
In math, we finished Unit 8 on equivalent fractions. Students will continue to be actively engaged using mathematical strategies to represent fractions as they utilize those strategies to add, subtract, and multiply fractions and mixed numbers.
Right before winter break all our 4th graders took their second iReady diagnostic. This month students will be taking their quarter 2 benchmark math assessment, and both their reading and math progress monitoring assessments. These assessments are an important instructional tool that helps us educators reflect, guide, and better engage our students.
We are now diving deeper into Habit 5: Seek First to Understand then to be Understood. Our students should be familiar with this habit because they have been actively working on and displaying it through our “Connect for Success” LEAD time lessons.
We are now moving into quarter 3 and students are analyzing and adjusting their goals to better reach those goals by the end of the school year. Please remember that our students are expected to be in school and engaged every day. If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to contact us here at the school any time. Success will happen as we continue to work together to help, support, and nurture our students so they can reach their fullest potential.

Hello and Happy New Year!
We hope you all had a restful and fun Winter break! We will hit the ground running as we begin the 3rd quarter!
In math, we will be working on adding and subtracting fractions. Fractions are all around us; encourage your student to identify examples of fractions in the world around them!
With the start of a new quarter, we will set new Reading Counts goals! Reading daily is a great way for students to work towards meeting their goals, as well as promote comprehension and vocabulary. Additionally, we are working on Module 6 from HMH Reading, which is centered around the essential question: “How do different art forms impact people in different ways?”
In science, we just wrapped up plant and animal adaptations and will kick off the new quarter by investigating organs in the human body!
We will continue exploring and practicing the 7 Habits during our class meetings and Connect for Success lessons.
Here is to a great 2023!
