Helping Educators Navigate Ohio's Learning Standards

Ohio's New Learning Standards provide coherence in academic expectations for students, teachers and education systems by identifying what students should know and be able to do at each grade level to be prepared for college and the workforce. As we continue to implement the standards, it will be a siignificant undertaking, requiring collaboration and leadership at all levels.

The Navigator

Ohio's New Tests will be used to help students, teachers and parents determine if students are on track for post-secondary success. PARCC has released a number of tools that will help teachers and administrators transition to the Common Core Standards and Ohio's New Test. The Navigator will assist educators in understanding the PARCC tools and how to use them.

PARCC has released the following documents that will assist educators in understanding the design of the assessments: Blueprints, Evidence Statement Tables, Evidence Sub-Claims, Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs) and Types of Tasks.

Ruth Ware and the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center developed The Navigator to guide educators in understanding the design and test specifications of the PARCC Mathematics Assessments -- Grades 3-8, Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry.

Go here to the Muskingum Valley ESC Website for a more in-depth view of our Navigator.

Mapping with PARCC Using the Math Tool Kit

BLEND THE CRITICAL FOCUS AREAS OF THE COMMON CORE WITH THE PARCC MODEL FRAMEWORK TO MAP MATH CURRICULUM

Dr. Ky Davis has outlined and described the Common Core critical focus areas for each grade level in The Math Toolkit for the Common Core. Ruth Ware has used the PARCC Model Content Framework to demonstrate the content emphasis in the standards at the cluster level in The Navigator to PARCCEvidence Tables, Blueprints and Performance Level Descriptors in Mathematics. Read more about the Maps here.

Math Practice Classroom Posters

The Common Core Mathematical Posters provide visual prompts for students and teachers. Written with “I can” statements, the posters give opportunities for seamless integration of the practices to become a natural part of everyday math and learning. Students will see the importance of using these practices to develop processes that will extend learning into interdisciplinary areas.

For information from the Common Core Website on the importance of the Mathematical Practices and why a set of posters would be a big help to teachers in the classroom click here.
