I want to ensure that everyone has the same information about the new process for enrolling in magnet schools that was recently changed by TPS. There are some changes that affect all magnet schools a little differently and this is a great way to share all of the information one more time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at forbeke@tulsaschools.org. I will help clarify any questions that might occur, and/or put you in contact someone who most definitely can assist. Please, read all of the information carefully as, again, the new policies are not all the same for EVERY magnet school.
I love you all, and I love Zarrow! GRACIAS for continuing to make this school AMAZING!
SIEMPRE,
Sr. Kellito

Arts in Education - Reflections
The Theme this year is "What is Your Story". There are 6 art categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Students are able to enter as many categories as they want. There are four grade divisions and we will compete in 2 of them. Primary: Pre-K -2nd Grade and Intermediate: 3rd – 5th Grade. The deadline for entries will be Wednesday, November 30, 2016. We will judge all the art work in our school competition. The top 5 in each category will go on to the Tulsa Council PTA contest. Then they will take the entries to Oklahoma City for the state competition. Winner will be announced at the end of the assembly.
More information along with the rules and entry form were sent out in an email and is on the Zarrow PTA Facebook page.

Counselor's Corner
We celebrated Red Ribbon Week the Week of October 22nd.
Our children range in age from four years old to eleven years old. The topic of prescription drugs is more time sensitive for our older children than our younger ones. However, as parents and grandparents, we are our children’s first and most influential educators. I chose to highlight this topic in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week so your child can be educated in the way you see fit.
Prescription medicines taken properly help heal illness, relieve pain, control disease and bring balance to our life. But when others take our medications, they can be very dangerous.
An alarming trend is emerging. In fact, it is all over the news. Every day, more than 4000 children and young adults begin experimenting with prescription drugs. These drugs range from pain relievers and depressants to stimulants and over the counter medicine.
Young people believe that since the medicines were prescribed by a doctor, they provide an inexpensive, legal and medically safe high. In the case of OTC remedies, most children have been given these medicines by their parents for common illnesses as fevers, colds and coughs. So adolescents believe it is safe to take these drugs whenever they choose. The proliferation of pharmaceutical ads on television as well as the Internet and peer misinformation helps contribute to this attitude.
Some disturbing facts include the following. More teens have been offered prescription drugs than other illegal ones, except marijuana. Four out of ten teens believe prescription and OTC medicines are less addictive and dangerous than street drugs. Seven million young people believe there’s nothing wrong with using non-prescribed medicines periodically and that parents “don’t care as much if you get caught”. More than one-third say they feel peer pressure to take prescription or OTC drugs.
Some preventative steps include: (1) remove drugs from your medicine cabinet and lock them up; (2) Safeguard all medicines by monitoring quantities and controlling access; (3) take inventory by writing down the names and amounts of medications you currently have and regularly check to see if anything is missing; (4) if your child is on prescribed medication, monitor the dosages, and refills; (5) set clear rules, such as not sharing and always following proper dosages; (6) set clear rules, such as not sharing and always following proper dosages. Warn your youngsters that taking prescription or OTC drugs without a doctor’s supervision can be dangerous and potentially lethal. Also, supervise your child’s Internet use; many pharmacy sites are not regulated and will sell your child medications without prescriptions.
This article was taken from information provided in the Red Ribbon Celebration Information Guidebook by the Chickasaw Nation. In conclusion, it takes all of us to protect our children.
I am grateful to be a part of all the good things at Zarrow!
