How it happened

Just before the civil war, George Wilkins Kendall, a news reporter, set up a 5,000 acre ranch east of Boerne. He encouraged many people to come to Texas to raise sheep. Sheep ranchers came from Northern states as well as Europe. After the Civil War, a growing demand for wool brought even more sheep ranchers to Texas.

Sheep Raising Important For Ranching Industry

Sheep raising had become very important for the ranching industry after mustangs were no longer profitable. Colonists bred heavy sheep with lighter Mexican variety. This doubled the sheep's weight and tripled it's wool. Sheep raising was efficient and effective for ranchers.
