Newsletter Week 7 Term 2
St Joseph's School Waipukurau 15th June 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
‘Ko ngā pae tawhiti, Whaia kia tata,
Ko ngā pae tata, Whakamaua kia tina!’
The potential for the tomorrow depends on what we do today
‘Love one another’
John 15:17
Kia Ora i te whānau kātoa,
One person can dramatically affect the lives of others. Catholic social teaching reminds us that we are called to embrace everyone. We are called to treat everyone lovingly, as God loves us. The goal of Catholic social teaching has been articulated in the Church since the beginning: “Love one another” (John 15:17) The principles of Catholic social teaching articulate this love in a precise and measurable way. In our world today, the principles of Catholic social teaching outlines our path toward building a just society and a life of holiness.
At St Joseph’s we are blessed to be provided with the opportunity to be consciously immersed in promoting our Catholic identity by ensuring that we treat those around us and our environment with dignity and respect.
Providing our students with many opportunities to engage with others outside of our school bubble is important. An example of this is when our senior students attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Havelock North last Friday. Our students watched presentations, engaged in interactive activities, discussions, and leadership games. They learned about striving to do things better than they have been done before. Using the acronym STEP, they were challenged to step up in the way that they serve others: take initiative; exemplify school values; and set a purpose.
Other connected learnings featured the development of ‘Having integrity’ and ‘Team work’ Aligned with our own school vision, values and missions statement, our students heard from others the importance of being an honest and upstanding student and showing what is right: telling the truth and encouraging others to do what is right.
Leading in Faith - Learning for Life
Matariki
This skillfully created retelling of one version of the Matariki story gives each star a meaning and purpose. From our Kahurangi Dance Performers, our students heard the story of Matariki from a Ngati Kahungunu perspective through the story of fish. As we work through our week, our students continue to deepen their own understanding of what the Matariki Cluster of stars means to them. Singing is one way we are using to remember the names of the stars.
As an acknowledgment of this year's Matariki celebrations, we have been invited by Gayleen and Andrew Alexander to experience the viewing of our Matariki Cluster from their safe building platform in Waipawa.
All whanau are welcome to join us from 5:30 PM
Bring binoculars/telescopes if you have them. You are also invited to bring everything ‘WARM’
Something warm to wear, something warm to drink, something warm to eat, and a warm heart.

Drop off and Pick up times
As the wind swirls and the rain falls heavily from the sky it is super important to be mindful when dropping off and picking up our students. Our drop off time is 8.25 am at the earliest to 8.50 am and pick up time is 2.55 pm. A reminder that children and parents need to use the school crossing on Russell Street if coming along this route. When dropping your child/children off by car please either park on the side of the road or use the church car park. Please keep an eye out for children in the car park. Don’t park on the yellow lines or in the bus zone or use the staff car park. You can drop the student off on River Tce as there is a stile they can use.
Parents are welcome to drop off and pick up students from their classrooms. Keep safe!

MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS
Kia Ora koutou, welcome to week 7.
Last week on Friday Room six and some Room five students left school early to attend the Grip Leadership Conference in Havelock North. They learned about; the meaning of leadership, how to be a good leader, what leaders do, and how to step up.
Last Thursday each classroom got to learn about music in the hall with Dan the music man. They learned about the different music instrument families which are Percussion, Woodwind, Brass, and String. Each student got to choose and play an instrument, it was really fun.

PFG Update (St Joseph's Parents and Friends Fundrasing Group)
Hello!
Friday - PIE day Thank you for your support with these. We hope the students are enjoying them! A big thank you to our helping hands - we couldn't do it without you!
Next week pie lunches will be on THURSDAY as school is closed for Matariki public holiday on Friday. Keep an eye out for your order forms a day early! (Lunches are a small slow burning fundraiser for the PFG, we organize, supply, sort etc for a small mark up that gets put back into the school in various ways.)
We had an awesome meeting on Monday night where locked in our 3rd year running quiz evening for term 3! We are super excited and will let you know more details when we have them. Thursday the 30th of June the PFG have the pleasure of shouting/cooking a sausage sizzle for the students and teachers. So if a tasty sausage is your thing don't bring a full lunch that day. Unfortunately the Cookie and croissants fundraiser is still delayed due to Yarrows supply levels. We know everyone loves these and we will jump on it as soon as we can!
Have a great week and thank you for your support!
