Another week has flown by with the exciting news that we have entered Level 1! Protocols follow.
Good practice suggests that whanau and visitors sign in at the office whenever on school grounds. Thank you.
It's great to see students wearing school uniform with pride - gone are white socks- thank you and black shoes are being worn.
Noticeably is the "wellness" of students- thank you for keeping students home if they are unwell, hand-washing remains a priority for student health here at school.
Please remember to have your say around the Future Education in Hawera School options- this is your town, your opinion will count and matter. Have your say!

Future Education Hawera Schools Survey - Have your Say!
The Ministry of Education is currently working on plans for future schooling in Hawera and the wider South Taranaki area. This involves investing money in property at Hawera Intermediate and Hawera High School. Previous consultation has been carried out on this, and now the Ministry is keen to renew discussions about how to achieve the best outcomes for students.
Six potential options for future schooling in the area are included in a survey which will be open until Sunday 21st June and information and the survey link can be accessed here:
Information: https://www.dandgconsulting.co.nz/hawera-and-wider-south-taranaki
Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HaweraSurvey
The whole survey will take approximately 15 - 20 minutes to complete, but it is possible to complete a shorter version in about five minutes.

Level 1 Protocols
The key change for schools and early learning services is that there are no specific public health requirements at Alert level 1.
Schools are no longer required to keep a contact tracing register, but as is usual practice our school will continue to keep a visitor register (signing in at the office) and maintain their attendance register (we will need to work with local health authorities to identify close contacts, should there be a case connected with the school).
Physical distancing is not a requirement but where possible or practicable is encouraged.
There are no restrictions on numbers at gatherings or on physical activities including cultural and sporting activities, practices and events. This helps with our school wide planning and events scheduled for Term 3.
All students need to be back at school as there is now no health risk. Students who are not attending will be marked as truant and reported to truancy officer to follow up.
- If students are sick, they should stay home
- Everyone must continue to wash and dry hands, sneeze and cough into the elbow
- Staff and Cleaners will regularly disinfect shared surfaces
- Soap, water and the ability to dry hands will continue to be provided in bathrooms.
Stringent self-isolation must occur for those who display relevant symptoms of COVID-19, test positive for COVID-19, have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, or have been overseas in the last 14 days – Ministry of Health information for self-isolation
We appreciate moving to Level One as it allows us to proceed with our winter sport programme which students have really missed! Sport trials will be held over the next few weeks and teams will start to practice. All students are expected to trial for two sports. Unfortunately some sports are very popular and numbers are limited. Options include netball (Saturday teams play in school), rugby, football, hockey, chess, indoor bowls, badminton and others.
This occurs each Friday from 11.40-12.30 and if you have some expertise in an area or just a passion we would love your support with coaching or managing the teams. Students who prefer not to be in a sport team will attend elective classes, selected from a range offered by teachers, where they will enjoy an alternative activity.
