Hilliard Highlights
The snow reduced our instructional week, but the scholars still made the most of the one day we had. Additionally, UES received recognition from the FCPS prize patrol for winning the MD Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School award. Our staff and scholars are incredibly proud and dedicated to our vision of "Learning Today Lead Tomorrow."
Congratulations to Mrs. Ivette Vichot-Taboas , the UES Teacher of the year! It was wonderful surprise for her to be recognized and celebrated in front of her colleagues during the professional development session, with the added joy of her family being there to share the special moment.

STEAM Night - A Winter Wonderland Date: January 30, 2024 Time: 6:00 pm-7:30 pm
Come join us for a night of learning and fun as we investigate winter through STEAM.
S - (science) investigate winter through Penguin Science, Snow Science, and Arctic Warmth investigations
T - (technology) investigate winter through coding - practice using coding mice then work through Hour of Code activities
E - (engineering) investigate winter through designing a snowball launcher and a sled
A - (art) investigate winter through creating chalk drawings of snowflakes
M - (math) investigate winter by solving winter tangram puzzles, and building 3D shapes.
There will be sessions to help students prepare for the science fair.

Please check your Thursday folder this week for the flyer with details! The donation from Panera will be used to support the 5th grade celebration.

You're invited to our insightful workshop: Middle School Mastery: Navigating New Horizons. Tailored for families preparing for the middle school transition.
🎯 Objective: To Empower Families in Overcoming Common Middle School Fears and Anxieties.
Our workshop leaders bring a wealth of experience:
- Kris is a mom of a rising 6th grader with a decade of experience teaching middle school language arts: her insights bridge professional knowledge and parental understanding.
- Angie: A mom navigating the middle school years with three kids in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and a rising 5th grader. She brings practical wisdom from her extensive parenting journey.
Key Focus Areas:
- Academic Challenges: Tackling increased homework and understanding academic expectations.
- Social Adjustments: Making new friends, adjusting to a bigger school, and handling peer dynamics.
- Independence and Responsibility: Helping your child manage their time and responsibilities and navigate complex situations.
This workshop is an opportunity to gain valuable insights, share experiences, and connect with other families on the same journey.
UES Family Bingo night on Friday February 9

Scholar Pick Up
Please make sure that you or your designee have your ID to share with the office staff when picking up your scholar anytime during our school day. We appreciate your collaboration.
Volunteer Training
All visitors and volunteers must complete the training every school year.
*Please note: All previous 2022-2023 school year volunteers are no longer active and MUST reapply for the 2023-2024 school year by creating a new account. You may REGISTER your new account using previous account credentials, but they will not work to sign-in as all previous records have been removed.

Transportation Changes
The mailbox address for questions and transportation is urbana.es@fcps.org
All transportations changes for the day must be completed by 1:30. This gives the school staff time to prepare the teacher, the scholar, and staff of the change before dismissal begins.
