Mahora School
NAU MAI HAERE MAI, TALOFA LAVA, WELCOME!
This term, we have welcomed a number of new students to Mahora School.
This week we introduce Jett Jefferys, Sophie Lowe Day and Micah Tutapu who have all started in our New Entrant class Rangiora. We hope you have all enjoyed your start at Mahora School.
TUMUAKI TALK
Kia ora e te whānau,
It's hard to believe we only have 23 school days left this term...the end of year is rapidly approaching. In schools we are trying to finish a year and also start the next one at this time so there is plenty on the go. Please keep a close eye on the calendar items but here are a few important reminders...
School App - Have you got this on your phone? There are so many messages and reminders shared this way...if you are unsure how to get this please call in and we can help or click this link.
2023 - We know that sometimes family circumstances change and this affects schooling. If your child/ren are currently in Year 0-5 at Mahora, but will not be with us in 2023, please let us know ASAP as we are organising classes now. At the same time, if you know anyone wanting to start in 2023, please encourage them to enrol as soon as possible. We are now accepting out of zone enrolments, but the sooner this is requested the more likely there will be a place.
As in previous years, class lists will be shared before the end of the year, so tamariki know where they will be in 2023.
Final Hui/ Interviews - It’s really important to be able to connect with you at the end of the year to discuss final progress and success as well as completing the Piki Haere Report for each child. While these are online, if you would like a physical copy of your child's Piki Haere Report, please let your child’s teacher know in advance before the hui, as they are more than happy to print them. Please remember there is also a space for you to contribute to the Piki Haere Report, either before or after the hui.
School will finish at 12.00pm on Thursday 1 December to allow time for these important Hui. Please ensure your children are collected at this time. All children will come home with a packed lunch on this day. There are two days to choose a time to meet...either Wednesday 30 November between 3:30pm and 6:00pm or Thursday 1 December between 1:00pm and 6:00pm. Details about booking a time will be sent home next week.
Safety - I have noticed some whānau members not being aware of a few safety items we have at school. They are there SOLELY to ensure all our children are safe.
PLEASE don’t ask your children to run across the road from the front gate to meet you. Frederick Street is extremely busy and with so many cars and it's really important the pedestrian crossing is used. PLEASE talk about this with your tamariki.
We worked really hard with Hastings District Council to establish a School Pick Up and Drop Off zone. This works well when everyone follows the rules...this area has yellow dotted lines.
Please do not leave your car in this space during the times listed...it's simply pick up or drop off. If you need to park and come into school, please park outside this area further along Frederick Street or one of the side streets. It is labeled with the following signs on both sides of the road outside. school.
There are times that we need to reserve the space mentioned above for buses for school trips. This avoids children having to cross the road and again, is a lot safer. If you see the signs below on the footpath facing the area, please do not park in this area as it is reserved for buses. Thanks for your support of safety.
Covid 19 - We are seeing more of this currently. If your children have any symptoms, please do test them...this is important to avoid spreading of the virus.
It’s fabulous to see all the positivity and opportunities at our kura...there is so much in this newsletter...enjoy reading about our wonderful tamariki.
Piki Haere,
Rohan.
AKO IN ACTION
HB Chess Tournament
It was a fabulous turn out for the HB Chess tournament. Thank you to Erika, Sally and Joe who were able to transport them to the Hastings Sports Centre and look after them for the day.
The boys wrote about their time there.
When we did the chess tournament, we felt nervous but also excited. At first we were winning until it was the third round we started to lose and draw. Overall Dom came sixteenth, Leon came nineteenth, Toby came thirty fourth and Chris came thirty sixth. Although we didn’t win, we still had a great time.
A & P Show Winner
Te Ariki Lambert visited the Nature Shed at the HB Show and completed a colouring in competition. He did such a great job he was one of two tamariki that won a $50 Torpedo7 voucher.
Ka rawe Te Ariki.
HĀKINAKINA AND MUSIC
Year 4, 5 & 6 Athletics
Our Year 4, 5 and 6 tamariki had a fantastic Athletics day this week up at the Mitre 10 Park. We are so lucky to have such a stunning facility so close to to us.
Everyone took part in each of our six events throughout the day, 100m, 200m, 400m, high jump, long jump and hurdle relays. We were proud to see so many of our athletes really giving every event 100% effort.
Our top athletes at each event will go on to represent Mahora at the Interschool Athletics on Wednesday 23 November. Thanks to our whānau, who were able to help with the day.
Check out some more great photos of the day on our school Facebook page.
Canoe Polo
Our two Canoe Polo teams had an exciting opportunity when they caught up with ex Mahora pupil Hannah Hunt at their games at the Mitre 10 Park a couple of weeks ago. Hannah is an inspiration to our young players and it was a bonus that she brought the Under 21 World Championship Trophy with her. 2022 was the first time New Zealand has ever won the Under 21 World tournament. Maybe in the future, there’ll be more ex Mahora pupils challenging for this trophy
Congratulations also to Hannah who has recently been awarded The Rachael Knight Emerging Young Athlete Award. This is an incredible award and will help her continue to work towards her goals, both sporting and in her Teacher training.
Weetbix TRYathlon
We are lucky in Hastings to be one of the eleven venue nationwide that host the Weetbix TRYathlon and for us at Mahora School, it even better because the event is just down the road at the Mitre 10 Park.
Check out the details below:
The Weetbix TRYathlon is a fantastic event and we’d love lots of Mahora tamariki to be able to attend.
The Entry fees and discount dates are here, plus also what the TRYathletes receive as part of their entry.
I certainly understand it is an expensive event, but an incredible experience which every child I have taken over the past many years, has loved. We have school bikes we can lend to tamariki that may need to borrow one and those confident Yr 4, 5 & 6 bikers can bike to and from the Mitre 10 Park with me, so no transport required.
Taking part can also provide a great training goal for over the Summer holiday. Maybe the entry could be a Christmas gift or your child could help earn the entry fee. The cut off for the early bird discount is the 25th of January so plenty of time to get your tamariki helping with lots of jobs around home!
Go to the following website to register www.tryathlon.co.nz/locations/hastings/ . There is also lots of information on the website, including training and nutrition tips, course maps and lots more. We have a Mahora School group so when you enter, please click to join that, so that we are in the draw to win great prizes for our great school. If you need a hand with the entry, please get in touch with me, I’m happy to help.

OTHER KORERO
Supporting Mahora students
Former student, Miley Newton has been doing cheerleading for a few years now and has been selected to be in a team that will represent New Zealand in the Global Games cheerleading competition in May next year. She has just returned from Auckland, where her team competed in Super Nationals and won first place for their division. This overseas competition next year comes with a large expense. She is calling on the local community to support her in her fundraising. She is hosting a movie night at Focal Point on Sunday 20 November (5:30pm screening) and the money raised from tickets Miley sells goes directly to her.
Please contact Jo Newton on 021 0296 9997 for further details.
Uniform donation
If you have any second hand uniform you would like to donate to the school, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please drop any good condition items into the office.
