Cougar Connect (Boletín)
Week of September 21, 2020 (Semana del 21 de septiembre)
iReady (Examen iReady)
District-wide, students will be taking an online test this week and the following week called the iReady. It is being used to assess students’ current abilities/levels and teaching needs in Language Arts and Math. If you would like to learn more about the iReady you can find information here: https://i-readycentral.com/familycenter/
At Kennedy we will administer the tests during Homeroom so that we don’t have to give up instructional time in Language Arts and Math class. The test will be administered in manageable chunks of roughly 20 minutes to ease the stress and allow the focus needed. Students can pick up right where they leave off the next day. This week we will focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary and the following week will be math. This test is adaptable and will be administered later in the year to track growth.
Students need to take this test independently without the help of anyone. This means students’ cameras will need to be on so staff can monitor this. I am realistic that there will be some technology issues. If a student gets dropped from their Google Meet/Zoom or the test, then the student should let the teacher know and sign back in. Please don’t stress. We will do the best that we can.
Schedule Change? (¿Cambio de horario?)
This past week I reached out to staff to start soliciting some feedback about the idea of moving to a block schedule based on what I had heard and observed from staff, students, and families. It seems like longer but fewer classes per day, as well as longer breaks in between classes, would make each day more manageable for most people. Truthfully, most of the summer I had envisioned Kennedy following a block schedule for distance learning. I changed my mind later in the summer to ambitiously try to get in more instructional minutes, especially for math, which needs a lot of repetition for most students, and for those in the accelerated pathways who need more time to cover an year-and-half of math. If we choose to move to a block schedule, I have some new ideas about how to still make more math (and support for all subjects) happen, and am working with teachers on how this could still be accomplished since it is not a one-size-fits-all solution or model. I considered a hybrid of a modified block and a seven period day like we normally do, which is an option on the survey below, but I think this will still be too much for everyone.
Please complete the survey below by Thursday, September 24. If we are going to make a change I would like to do this sooner rather than later, potentially as early as Monday, September 28 or Monday, October 5. Here are the things you need to know before taking the survey:
Wednesdays will remain the same schedule. Students must attend a live PE class of their choice, but then have a flexible day to complete work. (Choir has already begun, Jazz Band and Drama Club will begin soon, and more options are coming for enrichment).
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday will continue to start with first period. Why? Because for state reporting purposes, attendance first period is very important. Students have ELD during this period, which needs to happen daily per the state of California. (It can be synchronous and asynchronous). Outside programs that teach important social emotional learning skills have already been scheduled with outside entities and paid for. Staff needs to be checking in with students individually and through community circles and this is the consistent time we have dedicated to make this happen.
Students will need to check in for attendance first period, but there will be more flexibility for asynchronous work time and/or to get some support from teachers. This could also be a time used to get in some of the desired additional math minutes for some students. If we decide to go with a block schedule then we would clearly communicate when your student would have the extra asynchronous time because it will vary by grade and student.
The official instructional day for students will end earlier, but there will be additional time for scheduled and drop-in academic support. This time might also be used to incorporate some of those math minutes we feel are needed.
I have some part-time staff who cannot completely change their schedules, so timing on each day needs to be close to what it is now. What this means is the blocks will be as follows if we move to a full A/B block schedule: Mondays/Thursdays will be periods 1, 3, 5, 7. Tuesdays/Fridays will be periods 1, 2, 4, 6.
PE teachers Meek, Reynoso, and Emig do not teach on Friday because they teach on Wednesdays to help us fulfill the daily live teaching requirement (while the rest of the staff preps that day). Students and families have been very positive about PE on Wednesdays so I don’t want to take this away. This means that from an equity standpoint, PE on Thursday or Friday will need to be asynchronous otherwise the Thursday PE students would have had live instruction while the Friday ones would have had to be asynchronous. To be consistent this will be the same for the students who have Haynes, Gordon, Lee, or Kelley for PE. (These teachers are multiple subject core teachers who teach PE and another subject. This PE period for these teachers will be opportunities for academic support and/or to get some extra math in).
As you can see, schedules and schedule changes are complicated. However, a schedule change may be needed. I am looking for your feedback. Please take the time to complete the short survey below as soon as possible. There are five options: Stay with the current schedule, there are three choices for a block schedule (with varying minutes for breaks/lunch), and a hybrid option where two days per week would utilize a block schedule and the other two days would have seven periods like we currently have. There is also a place for comments/other feedback. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have questions.
Family Survey (Encuesta familiar)
Student Survey (Encuesta estudiantil)

Many of our teachers worked with students to switch over to Zoom last week and more will make the switch this week. (This is a different login process, so staff had to teach the students where to go and what to do). We are still working through challenges staff are reporting in regards to some of the Zoom settings and other things. However, it seems like less students are dropping in and out of class due to better stability and many teachers shared positive feedback about the breakout rooms, which is allowing students to engage more in conversation and collaboration.
Back To School Night (Noche de regreso a clases)
As mentioned last week, we will handle Back To School Night differently this year. On Sunday or Monday of next week, I will share the videos that staff made about their class, which will replace their normal presentation they would give during Back To School Night. Instead, on the evening of Thursday, October 1, staff will be available for you to pop in online and ask them questions from 6:30-7:30 pm. More details to come next weekend.
Students Taking Pictures (Alumnos tomando fotos)
In the morning announcements on Friday I reminded students that taking pictures of the computer screen and posting them online are both against the AUP agreement that families signed at the beginning of the year as part of the Back To School Update. This could lead to suspension and police involvement. This is also a reminder that once you do something online there is a digital footprint that never goes away.
Any Extra Laptops At Home To Donate?
Site Council and ELAC (English Language Advisory Committee) Consejo Escolar y ELAC (Comité Asesor del Idioma Inglés)
If you are interested in being an official part of our Site Council/ELAC this year, please send me a paragraph about yourself for our ballot by this Friday, September 25. A voting form will be included in next week’s Cougar Connect. Site Council/ELAC oversees how we spend our Measure U (parcel tax) dollars and site discretionary funds, and helps to make other decisions related to Kennedy programs. We meet once a month after school. Once I know who the members will be then we can set a regular date and time.
We need five official parents/guardians to be a part of our Site Council including at least one parent who has an English Language Learner who can represent ELAC. Others not elected are welcome to join us at our meetings, but will not get to be a part of official votes.
Want to know what your student is up to each week, what assignments are due and when? You can find all of this on teachers’ Google Sites. Go to the Kennedy Middle School Website - https://www.rcsdk8.net/kennedy, then “Kennedy Distance Learning,” and then “Teacher Google Sites.” Click on the teacher’s name and then there is a link to their Google Site. On the Google Site towards the top right you can click on “Weekly Assignments” to find out what your student is doing in class each week and what the assignments are. We are using a standard format for the weekly assignments, so you will see the same type of table/chart in this section for all teachers.
Teachers are available each week outside of class time to assist students by appointment. All teachers are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:45-3:10. (Some are available longer on these days and some are available by their choice on Wednesdays). Then all teachers have a second time during the school day they can help students if and when they have some asynchronous work time. This information is on their teacher website. As more teachers are absent, there will be more asynchronous work time because subs are going to be tough to come by as we already saw this past week. (Admin will try to step in, but it is pretty difficult for us given all of the distance learning requirements we have to follow and meetings). Also, as we get homeroom more fine-tuned there will be some additional asynchronous work time as well.
The USDA approved an extension to the free meal program through December 2020, which is great news. Here are some highlights.
Effective, 9/1/20, free meals are available to children 2-18 years old.
All families welcome, not restricted to RCSD, Connect, or KIPP students
No meal card is required
Students do not have to be present
Attached below are two fliers with all of the details about how and where you can get meals at RCSD locations. Starting on September 14, there are some new changes. Mondays families can pick up meals for students for Monday through Wednesday, and on Thursdays families can pick up meals for the rest of the week. Again, please read the fliers for more details. We know there are circumstances in which families cannot attend the designated pick up times, but we don’t want any student to go hungry and not have food because of this. Please call 650-423-2279 to request more information about meal delivery.
