New Buck Test Will Have Two Parts
The American Kiko Goat Association (AKGA) is partnering with Langston University (in Oklahoma) to hold a new buck test. The test will consist of two parts. The bucks will spend the first six weeks on pasture and the second eight weeks on feed in confinement. While in confinement, the bucks will be given a parasite challenge.
Virginia Ram Test Nominations Due By May 1
Virginia Tech's Southwest Ag Research and Extension Center Ram Test evaluates rams for parasite resistance, in addition to other traits. Nominations are due May 1. The test will begin on May 28, with delivery of rams to the test site. A sheep field day and educational program will be held on Friday, September 20, in conjunction with the sale of top performing rams. Many of the sale rams also sell with EBVs for parasite resistance.
Does Melatonin Trigger Hypobiosis?
University of Maine researchers designed an experiment to test the hypothesis that melatonin is the cue for Haemonchus contortus to enter hypobiosis. Effects of melatonin levels on development of H. contortus were determined by manually deworming and inoculating 16 adult Icelandic ewes, followed by twice-daily doses of 5 mg of melatonin for three weeks.
No Benefit to Feeding Fungus
A couple of studies reported in the scientific literature failed to show a benefit to feeding a nematode-trapping fungus (Duddingtonia flagrans). Studies involved dairy sheep in Switzerland, commercial sheep farms in Sweden, and kids and lambs in Germany.
Using Essential Oils to Control Coccidia
The objective of a Polish study was to assess the effectiveness of dietary supplementation with oils extracted from Origanum vulgare (Lamiaceae) and Citrus spp. (Citraceae) against coccidia and to determine the impact on lamb growth in an indoor housing system.
Prevalence of Coccidia in Florida Goats
A study was undertaken to determine the prevalence and intensity of coccidia infection in Florida goats. Fecal samples from 277 goats from 11 farms were examined.
