Unami United
October 30, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians, & Students,
Students and staff alike had a spirted week at Unami! It was great to see so many students participating in each day's theme. It is hard to choose which day they liked best...maybe crazy hats! Our advisory program lessons were connected to Red Ribbon week, with different grade levels doing different activities, but all focused on drug awareness and healthy and natural alternatives.
We hope you enjoy our newsletter!

Crazy Hat Day "Capped" off a Spirited Week
While Halloween usually has us thinking of ghostly spirits, Unami students and staff showed a slightly different (but no less significant) spirit this past week during our annual Unami Spirit Week. Our students and staff wore red for our Red Ribbon Week theme, our best sweats for sweatshirt/sweatpants day, leis and hula skirts for Hawaiian day, donned our favorite team colors for sports day, and "capped" it off with hat day on Friday, October 27. And... since one week just isn't enough... we decided to extend the week into Monday and Tuesday for tye-dye day and the opportunity to show off our costumes on Halloween!
It was... and will continue to be... an awesome week. Check out some photos of our staff and students below, taken during hat day.
LEAGUE CHAMPIONS...
Unami’s 9th grade boys soccer team can proudly call themselves “league champions”! The team won a championship thriller on Thursday, Oct. 26th against Holicong MS. Unami found themselves down early, three (3) goals to none, but battled back, and tied the game with just over ten (10) minutes remaining 3-3. With less than five (5) minutes left in the game, Holicong went ahead 4-3, but the team wasn’t ready to capitulate yet! As time expired, Sai D. converted a clutch header-goal, from a great free-kick by Liam D. to send the game into “penalty kicks”. Unami came away victorious, thanks to two (2) great stops by Bruno S. and clinical finishes by the Unami kick-takers. Congratulations to the team on winning the inaugural “CB 9th grade boys soccer – league championship”.
Earlier in the week, the team was victorious on two other occasions beating Holicong MS 4-3 and Tohickon MS 3-0 in the semi-final of the league tournament. Against Tohickon, Liam D. converted an early penalty kick and Nolan P. extended his goal scoring streak to seven (7) consecutive games as Jacob S. Marco C. and Logan S played well defensively, earning yet another shut-out. Nolan P. finished with a team high nine (9) goals and Sai M. lead the team in assists with six (6).
The boys tennis team finished out their season Wednesday and Thursday at the district championships held at CB East. Unami was well represented with wins from Nix V. and Ben Z. at doubles and Cam M. and Quinn B. in singles. Cam and Quinn ended the tournament by winning through and playing each other for the Championship. In a strong competition, Cam beat Quinn to repeat as singles champion of Central Bucks School District! What a terrific season!
ATTENDANCE E-MAIL...
Unami will now accept emails in place of a call or a note to the first period teacher for absences. We still require a handwritten note for students leaving prior to 2:30 and students arriving to school after 7:30. To acknowledge an absence you may email unamiattendance@cbsd.org (by 9:30 a.m.), call 267-893-3420 (by 9:30 a.m.) or send a note to your child’s first period teacher the day he or she returns to school. Any absence that is not acknowledged by a parent after 3 days will become unexcused.
INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
TEAM GRANITE SPOTLIGHT...PUBLISHING THEIR VERY OWN "SCARY STORIES"...
For the month of October, Miss Kotzen, Miss Musoleno, and Mrs. O Connor's ELA-A co-taught classes have been working hard, reading our model text, Coraline, and crafting our own scary narrative tales. We then compiled these spine-tingling stories to create two class e-books! Students are proud to share their spooky creations. These horror stories will terrify you…so beware!
Innovation & Creativing...aka...InC
In the new course, Innovation and Creativity, students have been busy learning about careers and incorporating this into the courses project based learning theme by creating a cereal box. Below is a sample video from Gianna D.

Red Ribbon Week Celebration!
At the end of each October, we join in celebrating National Red Ribbon Week, which promotes drug awareness and seeks to educate our youth on alternatives to drugs and alcohol. Red Ribbon Week has been the focus of our Advisory lessons in all grade levels, including some discussions about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, "natural highs" our students can pursue that do not involve drugs or alcohol, and some artistic expression of Red Ribbon Week and its themes. In 9th grade the latter involved students creating index card quilts with "natural highs". The quilts are still a work in progress and should be completed by the end of next week. In 7th and 8th grade, students in each advisory worked to decorate their respective classroom doorway, and their work was incredible! We will be judging the top 3 doors in each grade early next week!
Take a look at some of our wonderful Red Ribbon Week doors below. Which would you judge as best?

UNAMI ATHLETICS' SPOTLIGHTS
The 9th grade boys soccer team won the CB tournament in a thrilling championship capped off by winning penalty kicks. Great job boys!
The 8th grade boys soccer team lost to Holicong earlier this week 3-0. Eric S. Eric G, and the rest of the midfield created several goal scoring opportunities that came up just-short. The team looks to improve on their overall record of 2-3-2, as they host Log College MS on Friday, Oct. 27th and travel to Tamaned MS on Tuesday, Oct. 31st.
8th grade field hockey continues to improve their record as they reach the end of the season. A lot of different girls have stepped up as goalie and goal scoring continues to be spread around. Good luck in the final week girls.
The 9th grade girls soccer team beat Holicong on Wednesday in the District semi-final game which ended in a shootout. Unfortunately, the team lost 3-2 the next day in a well played championship game against Tohickon. Overall, the girls had an excellent season and ended in second place in the District. Way to go girls!
The 8th grade football team took on Klinger on Thursday. Colin H. had a 70 yard touchdown run while Nick S. and Devlin C. both had double digit tackles.
The girls tennis team wrapped up the season this past week by competing in the CB tournament. Ellie P. and Grace N. put on their best performance of the season and won the first doubles tournament. In girls' 1st singles, Marissa P. won for Unami in 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 sets. Congratulations, on a great win and a great season!!
Celebrating a Great 7th Grade Field Hockey Season!
The 7th grade field hockey team had a tremendous season. With our largest team in years we were able to build a strong bond and end the season with a 1-0 victory against Holicong! Our final game was a wonderful example of everything we had learned and how well communication plays off both on and off the field. We ended our season with a pizza party to celebrate. Best of luck next season ladies!

LINK 2 UNITY NOVEMBER WORKSHOP...INVITATIONS COMING MONDAY!
Throughout the year, and especially in Unami United Advisory, we support our students as they learn to find their voice and "stand up" for themselves and others. Once our students leave Unami and go on to CB South High School, building student advocacy is continued and broadened through a program called "First LINK." As a part of LINK's service outreach, those South students work with our Unami students to foster community building and servant leadership. We call this "Link to Unity" or L2U for short.
We will have our first L2U on Saturday, November 11th for all interested 8th and 9th graders who have not been linked before. To receive an invitation to L2U, students (or parents, guardians, teachers) need to fill out a quick nomination form.
L2U starts at 8:30 and ends at 11 a.m. Being that it is an action and learning packed two-and-a half hours, students must commit to attending the entire session (no leaving early). Participation is free and student participants get a L2U t-shirt at the end.
LINK LEADERS WANTED
8th & 9th Graders,
If you have already participated in L2U before, and you want to remain involved in this student advocacy program, click here to complete a Link Leader application. Link Leaders will assist in leading L2U Saturdays to promote community, energy and action at Unami! This is a great leadership opportunity, which can be documented for NJHS or NHS applications!
