Each season I provide inspiring nuggets of wisdom through my newsletter and invitations to events. Seasonal teachings help people see their world in a new way and come through both my personal and professional experiences and various indigenous practices. One of which is the Chinese Five Elements philosophy of Wu Xing (wŭ ching) which highlights unique nature-based ways to understand and process change, and problem-solve. Find this newsletter useful? AUTUMN: A Time to Honor What's Beautiful & to Grieve

  • According to Eastern traditions there are 5 seasons, each represented by an element, color and emotional characteristics. Here's a simplified explanation.
    • Winter : Water : Blue : Stillness : Fear
    • Spring : Wood : Green : Creativity : Anger
    • Summer : Fire : Red : Connectivity : Joy
    • Late Summer : Earth : Yellow : Integrity : Sympathy
    • Autumn : Metal : White : Acknowledgement : Grief

Autumn is related to the METAL element which represents the emotion of grief and informs a sense of awe, inspiration, loss, acknowledgement and letting go. Through the season of autumn, we are reminded to honor the natural beauty of change and reflect upon the aspects of life which are deeply sacred and powerfully transforming. Autumn is a lovely and beautiful season. Leaves change, temperatures cool, we remember our friends and meet for gatherings, festivals and fairs. It's also a time to honor change and nod to what we may have lost along the way.

The act of grieving is not something we tend to readily dive into.
It can be a difficult and lonely place to explore. And yet, it's often an emotion we all face in our personal and professional lives, a little bit each day. It's called change. Overtime when we don't address and acknowledge its presence we can be inundated, overwhelmed and drowned by the sensations of loss. Believe it or not, honoring and acknowledging what is and what's changed is tremendously healing and prepares you for new growth and a new season. It's good to let go.
August and September were big travel months for me. I facilitated a women's retreat at the NC coast, went to Sanford NC to meet with Pfizer employees, then out west to a professional coaching conference in Arizona, where I also visited Sedona and the Grand Canyon along the way, then scooted to DC with family for personal business. So much movement kept me on my toes! The most powerful part for me was letting go of some important things myself, hearing success stories from retreat participants around what changed for them after the retreat experience and the building of new relationships with lovely people across the country. I certainly honor the season of autumn by acknowledging the gift of relationship and the resources I have to help others heal, grow and succeed. What about you? What can you acknowledge right now?

    Reflect on Your Life

Humans function like seasons of the natural world. We often easily respond to the expressions and changes of the natural world. Take a moment to reflect upon what's changing for you, personally and professionally.
    • How do you acknowledge the talents, gifts or skills within yourself or others?
    • Where might you be in or out of alignment with your values?
    • What must you let go of in order to make room for what's new?
    • What is your relationship to death and grief?
    • What have you lost or gained lately?
