MLC: Welcome to 2020-2021
8/6/20
Our Focus
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Metropolitan Learning Center. We are excited to get the school year started and partner with families for a great year. We know this will be a different kind of start because of the full-time, Home-based Learning that all of PPS, including MLC, will be using until at least November 5th. (PPS will notify families by October 10th about plans beyond November 5th.)
Building on our experiences from last spring, there are many opportunities for individual and community growth and engagement. MLC has a decades-long history of providing experiential learning opportunities for students. While a distance-learning model can make that challenging, the school will continue to look for ways to make this the most engaging year possible. Just as important, MLC will make a renewed focus on racial equity, providing ongoing work-shop opportunities and trainings for school staff. There is also a parent group that has reformed that is focused on racial equity. It will also be important for students to be involved in this work as much as possible. We will need the whole MLC community to engage in this effort and to find a way to be intentional about centering multiple perspectives as we work to be a welcoming, inclusive school community.
MLC's focus on experiential learning, racial equity, and the school's five character traits will guide the school program this year. The five character traits are Compassion, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Self-Discipline. These five traits, along with a Restorative Justice approach to conflict resolution, will help students in their social-emotional growth throughout the year. We look forward to the positive changes and experiences students will have this year.
Along with everyone else, we wish we were welcoming you back to the building in a few weeks, but we will have to wait. We will do everything we can to maintain and build a school community this year where students, families, and staff feel valued and welcomed. Look for frequent updates over the next few weeks with information about schedules, timelines, opportunities for family and parent involvement, contact information, etc. Please contact the school office at 503-916-5737 with questions. We're looking forward to a great year!
