SPED 575-50: Methods & Models Gifted/Creative

Carolina Mountain Home

I live in Warne, North Carolina which is located in Clay County. I grew up in Brasstown, NC just a few miles away from my current residence. My husband, children, and I lived in metro Atlanta for about seventeen years, but decided to move back closer to our roots in North Carolina about ten years ago. We both have large extended families living in Western North Carolina, and we wanted our children to experience growing up in a rural area near both sets of grandparents.

Closely Knit Family

Lamar and I have been married 26 years. We have three children: Alexis, Aaron, and Calista. Alexis, age 20, is a sophomore at Meredith College in Raleigh where she is majoring in music education. Her instrument major is saxophone. Alexis marched with the NC State Marching band this football season. Our son Aaron, age 18, is in his first year at UNC Chapel Hill; he is accepted in their chemistry program but is loving his political science and philosophy classes. He already has an A.A. degree from his early college and will be classified as a senior after this semester. Calista, age 15, is our youngest child, and she attends Hayesville High School in Clay County.

ELA Teacher

I teach English Language Arts at Hayesville Middle School in Clay County.

This is my ninth year at HMS; and my tenth year teaching.

I love teaching and learning, and I want to encourage my students to enjoy learning and to use their creativity in that process!

I am taking the AIG licensure program courses at the request of my principal and because I want to be able to reach my gifted learners in the regular education classroom to the best of my ability. There are several teachers in my building, who are enrolled in this program.

I enjoy reading and writing poetry. Sometimes, I enter poetry contests.

I love traveling with my family. One of my favorite trips was to Mesa Verde to see the cliff dwellings.

I also like visiting science and history museums!
