Noise Level in the Cafeteria

There were 28 responses to the survey about the cafeteria noise level and trying the CD described in last weeks E-News. Of those 28, all 28 responded YES, they would like us to try this system to control the noise level in the cafeteria. There were several valid concerns regarding obstacles that I will list below so that we are all aware and cognizant as we move forward with this on Monday. Please prepare your children prior to entering the cafeteria that we are listening for the music, when we hear the music we must be silent, when we do not hear the music we can whisper to our neighbors. Try presenting it as a game...like Simon Says. It may take some time for children to acclimate, we should give them the time they need, model desired behaviors and praise those who are doing what is asked.

How it works:
When students hear the music they must be quiet and focus on eating and enjoying the music. When the music stops they may talk quietly to their neighbors. Lunch dismissal and arrival to the cafeteria will follow the same rules. We will talk with Mr. Jimmie and Mr. Jean about these new procedures and ask them to encourage desired behaviors.

Obstacles to Be Aware Of: (Copied directly from the survey)
  • It will take time for the students to learn to listen for the music, but I am excited to try this!
  • This may be difficult as classes are coming while others are already eating. Could disrupt the pattern but students will need to be cognizant of it and follow as they are in line waiting for food.
  • All teachers must participate.
  • Teachers must address students who are talking during the quiet time at the noise level as not to "bring out" the student. Address quietness with quietness.
  • every grade level must be "on board"
entering and especially leaving the cafeteria are very noisy for some grade levels
  • Making sure teachers are diligently monitoring students to make sure they are on task with music.

iPad Survey: From Mr. Z (Please complete before leaving on March 27)

The following is a quick survey I’ve created to ensure that we have properly documented and are correctly tracking all classroom (student use) iPads at Ebinport. Please answer these few questions ASAP. Note: Do not include iRock iPads in your responses. Only include iPads that were received as part of a grant, purchased directly through the school, or were part of CBL. This includes student iPads that are new this year and ALL previous years.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this… Mr Z

Recruitment Fair

It's that time of your for the Rock Hill School District Teacher Recruitment Fair. It will be held at Saluda Trail Middle School on Saturday, April 11 from 8:30 - 12:30 p.m. Each school has been asked to provide 4 team with 2-3 teachers on each team. The District is offering incentives to those who work all four hours. Each teacher will receive 4 hours of continuing education credits and your name will be entered for a drawing to receive an additional Personal Leave Day provided by the District Office. In addition to these incentives, Ebinport will offer the teachers who work all four hours the option of receiving 2 jean pass days or wearing flip flops for two days. The final incentive provided by Ebinport is that the teachers will get to leave school at 2:45 on 2 days of their choice as long as they are not scheduled meeting days. As you can see, there are numerous incentives in volunteering for this event. The reason for this is that it is vital that we pre-screen interested teaching candidates so that we will know great teachers who are interested in Ebinport should positions become available. There is a sign up sheet in the teacher work room in the main office. It is attached to a door on the upper cabinets. Thank you in advance for volunteering for this extremely important event.

Upcoming Grade Level Retention Meetings: More information to come

In last week's E-News I said that retention meetings would be held in lieu of a faculty meeting, while this was my intention it is not how this week worked out. The district has asked for each school's vote for cursive writing curriculum on Thursday, so we will use Tuesday to meet with grades 2-5 to discuss materials presented at the materials caravan and make a school decision on what our vote will be. We will move forward with retention meetings as planned since they won't be affected by this meeting.

When/where are the meetings?
  • March 23 2:45 First grade Retention meeting in the conference room.
  • March 24 2:45 Kindergarten Retention Meeting in the conference room.
  • March 25 2:45 Second Grade Retention Meeting in the conference room

Who should attend?
  • The grade level that we are meeting about
  • One teacher from the grade level above the grade level that is meeting to serve as an expert on required skills for success
  • One resource teacher to share their knowledge and expertise regarding the ways students learn best.
  • Building administration
  • Guidance Counselor

What should I bring to my grade level meeting?

  • Information that would help this team make decisions regarding retaining a student. Only students whose parents have been told previously that retention is a possibility should be presented in these meetings.

*Next year we will have two meetings structured like this and we will have a meeting for all grade levels. In the Fall meeting we will meet as a grade level to discuss student progress and possible interventions. Spring meetings will focus on next steps for students.

If you have a scheduling conflict please let me know!
