Classroom Updates
English Language Arts (ELA)- Ms. Furst
Students just finished our unit on Mysteries and Investigations through our curriculum Amplify. Students focused on finding evidence and using it to support their claim. We read about Yellow Fever and how a cure was discovered for the disease. We also read some Sherlock Holmes mystery stories and used text evidence to solve them. Ask students to share some of the strategies they learned to create strong arguments!
Students are now starting their next unit on Greek Mythology. We will be completing a Quest on Amplify where students have to free the different Greek gods by reading about them and answering questions to unlock them. We also are reading a chapter of The Odyssey and the myth of Arachne. We will be discussing how to find a theme in a short story, symbolism, and using text evidence to support a response. We will also continue to practice using the RACE model in our writing and explaining our answers.
At home we are highly encouraging that students:
- Read for at least 30 minutes a night- students can get books from the library, ask me, or see Schoology for more ideas for how to get books.
- Practice on Lexia Power Up- students can access through Clever
- Read articles or the news and discuss it with people at home
- Ask Ms. Furst for more specific ideas for your student!
Math- Ms. Pearson
Happy New Year! For the month of January our unit will include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. Students will practice their skills finding greatest common factors and least common multiples to simplify fractions. Important vocabulary terms to discuss at home include factors, multiples, mixed numbers, improper fractions, and reciprocals.
To add and subtract fractions students will need to find common denominators. To multiply two fractions students need to multiply the numerators and the denominators. Dividing fractions students will follow the keep change and flip rule. As always, reach out if you have any questions or want more at home practice for your children.
Science/Social Studies- Mr. Herb
Greetings and happy new year!
Our students have been hard at work in Science learning all about thermal and kinetic energy! Students have dealt with hands-on experiments and engineering challenges. For example, students built coolers using household materials to demonstrate heat transfer.
Our dedicated students have integrated their math skills with science, doing real physics calculations that they can use in high school and beyond!
Soon we will begin our Social Studies unit on Africa. Students will learn about river systems and how they affect people's livelihoods as well as engaging in an independent research project. I truly believe our students can engage in academic material as rigorous as anywhere is else in DC or the world. We will continue to work to build the skills students will need in their future.
