Garfield Extended Break Update
March 19th, 2020
Weekly Message
First, it has been wonderful receiving texts from teachers about how you're staying connected with families and students throughout this extended break. Through social media and email we have been receiving positive comments from our families about how Garfield is continuing to support their children. Thank you!
Last week, we were notified that Garfield would be expected to serve approximately 15 lunches to students per day throughout the three week closure. Through our letters to families, dojo messages, posts on social media, updates to the Garfield website with additional information, newsletters and consistently returning family phone calls we are averaging 99 meals served per day, the 3rd highest out of 22 schools serving meals in the district. We have also already run out of school supplies (paper, pencils, crayons, glue, workbooks, scissors & more) that we have been providing to families. ***If anyone is free on Friday to go shopping for school supplies, then organizing the supplies on our front tables, please let me know***.
Thank you to Elardo, Mix, Hart, Handley, Dewitt, Cummings and Geftic for submitting materials to be posted on Facebook. I also appreciate Geftic and Mrs. D for assisting me with posting and replying to families on Facebook and Instagram. During the past 7 days, our Facebook views have increased 192%, posts have reached 4,432 people, a 471% increase, page likes have increased 1400% and 1,310 people have engaged with our posts (in just 7 days!). Thank you! Our families are definitely wanting to stay in the know. Also, when you have a moment, check out our updated pictures on our CMSD Garfield Homepage.
Here are some creative ideas to stay in contact with your families from your colleagues:
- Elardo: Created interactive lessons to communicate with students.
- Lehane: Scheduling Facetime sessions to continue instructing students.
- Giermann: Engaging students and parents through Dojo chats and lessons.
- Murphy: Teaching groups of students in her 7th & 8th grade classes through Zoom.
Lastly, we are applying for a grant through the State of Ohio for $2,000 to assist with meeting the needs of our families during the school closure. If you would like to assist in completing the application, please let me know.
Team, I appreciate each of you and the dedication you're bringing to our families and students.
