Principal's Message
Dear St. Maria Goretti Catholic School Families,
Wishing you all a blessed Good Friday!
What a glorious morning we were blessed with yesterday as the 8th Grade students, along with Mrs. Pennell & Mrs. Richards, led us outdoors for live Stations of the Cross. It was such a beautiful way for us to conclude our Lenten journey as a school community. Also yesterday, 2nd Grade students and their teachers participated in a lesson on The Last Supper, and on Wednesday, the 6th - 8th Grade Performing Arts students treated the PK - 3rd Grade students to a puppet show production of The Little Donkey's Easter Journey. Please be sure to see the many photos of all of these events below.
Registration and bidding is open for our virtual Auction & Dinner, Evening of Light, which will take place on Saturday, April 10th! Please click on the link (http://bidpal.net/eolauction2021) to register, to purchase your Party in Place dinner to enjoy that evening from Hurtado's BBQ, and to begin bidding on live and silent auction items. See details below.
Students whose parents purchased an Evening of Light Gala t-shirt will be permitted (and encouraged) to wear the shirts with their uniform bottoms everyday (except Wednesday) next week!
Earlier this week, the faculty & staff, along with the Assistant Superintendent, Ms. Melissa Kasmeier, presented me with an award for excellence in leadership, for which I am truly honored and humbled. Thank you all for the kind words, remarks, and congratulations that many of you made on the Facebook post. As I told the faculty & staff, it takes a team and they are all a big part of our success this year at SMGCS!
We ask you to please continue to share the good news of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School with any family and friends with school-aged children. Invite them to call to schedule a personal tour to learn more about SMGCS. YOU are our best advertisement and we need your help! Thank you!
Reminder-We will be closed (NO School) today (Good Friday) and Easter Monday, April 5th. Classes resume on Tuesday, April 6th.
I pray you all have a very blessed Good Friday and Easter Triduum and a wonderful week ahead!
St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!
Blessings,
Laura Behee, M.Ed.

APRIL VIRTUE: Forgiveness – Pardoning those who offend you
Forgiving others can be difficult, but a lack of forgiveness only hurts us more, binding us like a chain, hanging over us like a dark cloud, preoccupying our thoughts and making us misunderstand situation. Forgiveness frees us. Forgiveness means that, even if the person is not sorry for what he or she did, I refuse to let the hurt control my life.
Saint Patrick: Feast Day - March 17
Saint Patrick was born in England. As a teenager he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave. While tending his master’s flocks alone, Patrick turned to prayer and his Catholic faith. After six years of slavery, Patrick escaped. While preparing to become a priest, he had a dream of the Irish people asking him to return and teach them the Catholic faith. Out of love for the people of Ireland, Saint Patrick returned there and brought the people the message of Jesus’ love and forgiveness.
Blessed Margaret of Castello: Feast Day–April 13
Blessed Margaret of Castello was born into a family of Italian nobility. However, she was also born blind, lame and with a hunchback. Margaret’s parents did not want others to find out about her because they were ashamed of her and thought that she was unfit to be their daughter. When Margaret was seven they locked her away in a cell next to the church so she could hear Mass, but no one would be able to see her. It was here that a priest found her and discovered Margaret’s intelligence. He taught her more about God and the Catholic faith.
When Margaret was about 16 years old, her parents took her to a distant shrine where people were sometimes miraculously cured. They left her in the church and told her to pray for a miracle. When they returned at the end of the day and saw she had not been healed, they abandoned her there and returned home. The church beggars found her, and realizing what had happened, began to condemn her parents. When Margaret recovered from her shock of being left behind and realized what they were saying, she told them to stop. She would not allow anyone to speak poorly of her parents and said it was time she took care of herself.
The beggars soon recognized that Margaret was very holy, and they told her she should be a religious. Margaret became a Dominican sister. Rather than being bitter about her difficulties, she forgave those who had hurt her, lived joyfully with the sisters, cared for the sick, and visited those in prison. By God’s grace, she even worked miracles. After she died, a crippled child was cured at the place of her burial. She was declared blessed in 1609.
Saint Josephine Bakhita: Feast Day-February 8
Josephine Bakhita was born in Sudan, Africa, to a loving family. Missionaries had never evangelized her village, and her family practiced a traditional African religion. When Bakhita was nine years old, she and a friend went outside their village to gather plans. Bakhita saw two men who asked her to get a bag at the edge of the forest. She did not know the men were Arab slave traders from northern Africa. As she went to get the bag, she was captured and carried away. She never saw her family again.
The slave traders locked her in a dark hut for a month, where she cried herself to sleep each night longing for her family. She was so traumatized that she forgot her own name, so the slave traders named her Bakhita, which means “lucky one”. Finally, she was marched to a slave market and sold to the first of several cruel masters. She was beaten often, once so severely that she couldn’t get out of her straw bed for a month and she walked with a limp for the rest of her life.
After about four years, she was sold to an Italian merchant. The master was kind to Bakhita and calmed her fears. Later, he decided to return to Italy, and Bakhita begged him to take her along. Once there, he gave her to the wife of a friend who wanted help with her young daughter, Mimmina. Bakhita cared for and loved Mimmina. When her master and his wife had to return to Sudan for business, they decided to leave Bakhita and Mimmina in Italy. They stayed at a school run by Canossian sisters. There Bakhita was able to learn about Jesus and the Catholic faith. She rejoiced to learn about God. She said of her childhood that, “Seeing the sun, the moon and the stars, I said to myself: who could be the Master of these beautiful things? And I felt a great desire to see Him, to know Him and to pay Him homage…”
Bakhita wanted to be baptized and receive Holy Communion. However, several months before she was finished with her preparation, her master’s wife returned to take Bakhita and Mimmina to Sudan. Bakhita did not want to leave and asked to be able to stay to receive the sacraments. but her mistress refused. The Sisters appealed to the Cardinal Patriarch of Venice, and he to the royal governor. The governor declared that since slavery was illegal in Italy, Bakhita was not a slave but a free woman!
Bakhita stayed with the Canossian Sisters and received Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation on January 9, 1890. She added Josephine as her baptismal name, but kept the name Bakhita, truly feeling that she was not a fortunate one. Often after her Baptism, Bakhita kissed the baptismal font saying, “Here I became one of the daughters of God!” After several years, Bakhita asked to join the Canossian Sisters.
Saint Josephine Bakhita saw God’s care and purpose in her life. She was able to let go of all bitterness toward those who had kidnapped, enslaved, and mistreated her. She said, “If I were to meet those slave raiders that abducted me and those who tortured me, I’d kneel down to them to kiss their hands, because, if it had not been for them, I would not have become a Christian and religious woman.”
Holy Week as a Family
At SMGCS, you have entrusted us with the spiritual and intellectual education of your child. We are honored and thank you. As we enter this Holy Week, we encourage all SMGCS parents to turn their home into a miniature and domestic church. Parents as spiritual formators of their children can do so much to deepen their child’s faith and now’s the time!
As Lent draws to a close, we anticipate the holiest week of the year. There is so much to do together as a Catholic parish family, but there is so much we should do in our homes and hearts to live the Passion with Our Lord and prepare to celebrate His triumphant Resurrection.
Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Holy Week at Home
Below are simple and meaningful ways to draw closely to Jesus in His Passion and Death—all while living as a Catholic family home—a domestic church.
Ideas for all of Holy Week
Here are some ways to live Holy Week, some activities are particular to specific days.
- Pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Learn more here: http://straymonds.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/loh_guide.pdf and https://www.universalis.com/today.htm
- Pray the Rosary
- Pray the Stations of the Cross
- Pray with Scripture, especially Gospel passages of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord
Enter the Triduum
The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum.-USCCB
The Triduum lasts from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Holy Saturday.
Music Playlist for the Triduum

Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, when he established the Sacrament of the Eucharist and instituted the priesthood. Learn more here:
https://www.osvnews.com/2019/04/14/holy-thursday-mass-of-the-lords-supper/
Foot Washing
Have a foot washing ceremony.
- Read John 13:1-15.
- Parents, wash your children’s feet (or hands for the squeamish.)
- Each share a time when someone showed you an act of service and what that meant to you.
- Brainstorm ways to incorporate the Works of Mercy into your life, especially during this time of Covid.
Remain With Jesus
Consider Jesus’ loneliness during this week, but especially as He entered into His Passion. Tonight, spend time with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, this is known as Adoration when done before the Eucharist. Unite your loneliness to His loneliness in the Garden.
- Go to Holy Thursday Mass at your parish church
- Add flowers or plants to your prayer space to give it that garden feel.
- If it is warm enough, take your prayer outdoors.
- Read Matthew 26:36-46 to set the tone.
Good Friday
Follow Guidelines and Requirements for Fasting and Abstaining
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. On this day, follow the guidelines for fasting and abstaining from meat.
Keep a Period of Silence from Noon- 3pm
This is the time that Jesus was on the cross and suffered for us.
Venerate the Cross—preferable at church
Around 3 p.m., spend time before a crucifix if unable to go to your parish church.
- Read John 18:1-19:42.
- At the words, “And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit,” kneel and adore Christ Crucified.
- You can also pray the Stations of the Cross. Check for live-streamed opportunities if you are not attending at your parish church
Holy Saturday
Have you noticed that Scripture is almost silent about Holy Saturday? The Gospel of Luke gives the only clue about what happened that day: “On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment” (Luke 23:56).
Rest and Wait
Life can feel a lot like Holy Saturday, can’t it? We are waiting. At times, we don’t know what to do. But Jesus’ own disciples teach us what to do. In the midst of tremendous sorrow and pain, in the midst of chaos, in the midst of uncertainty and fear, Jesus’ friends rested and waited. And we are invited to do the same.
- Attend Holy Saturday Food Blessing: Gather your Easter meal items and get them blessed at a parish offering an Easter Food Basket Blessing. Learn more here: https://blogs.ancientfaith.com/behind-the-scenes/2018/03/29/put-together-traditional-easter-basket/
- Bring your troubles and questions to prayer: As you wait by Jesus’ tomb, how do you feel? Especially as you see similarities between the historic Holy Saturday and your own lives, how do you hear His still, small voice whispering to you promises of a new day, a new creation?
- Like the Apostle John, invite Mary into your heart and home (John 19:25-27).
Anticipate Easter
Make Preparations
Quietly and hopefully prepare for Easter:
- Dye eggs.
- Make Easter cards and mail them to loved ones.
- Go on an evening walk and write hopeful messages on the sidewalk with chalk. Place painted rocks in neighbors’ yards.
- Adorn the family’s crucifix with spring flowers
- Make an “Alleluia!” poster to add Easter festivity to your home
- On Easter, sing as a family Easter hymns filled with joy. Suggestions: “Christ the Lord is Risen Today!”, “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”, “At the Lamb’s High Feast”, “The King of Love My Shepherd Is”
- Many traditional foods are associated with Easter from cultures around the world. Perhaps do some research and try to make a special paschal cuisine.
- Make an Easter Candle for the Easter Table (the simplest version can be done with permanent markers on the side of a white candle. See the basic idea here: https://emiliaspost.com/blog/how-to-create-your-own-pascha-easter-candle/

Current Volunteer/Donation Opportunities:
- Disposable Face Masks & Gloves-Donate boxes of disposable face masks and gloves of all sizes and earn one SPIRIT hour for each box donated. Donations can be brought to the school front office, Monday - Friday between 7:30AM - 3:30PM.

Please continue to complete the app before arriving in carline and be ready to show the completed screening to a faculty/staff member on duty in carline each morning. Multiple students can conveniently be added to one app. Please call the front office if you have any questions about how to install the app.
Student Email Accounts and Google Classroom
All students, whether learning On-Campus or via Distance Learning, have school email accounts that they generally access during computer class, and will also need to access Google Classroom. Parents of students in Grades 4th - 8th who are attending classes On-Campus were sent information and instructions for their student(s) to access their email accounts, log-in to Google Classroom, and create a bookmark on their home devices. Students have also be given this information during computer class, as many 4th-8th Grade teachers provide feedback on assignments, etc. to students via Google Classroom. As well, being familiar with logging in to Google Classroom will be helpful should we ever need to move to distance learning during the school year. If you did not receive your student's log-in information or have questions, please contact Mrs. Daly (jdaly@smgschool.org).
As well, please check out the following tutorial for detailed instructions on signing into Google Classroom.

Last Week at SMGCS.....
Excellence in Leadership - Mrs. Laura Behee
SMGCS faculty & staff surprised Mrs. Behee this week with a leadership award which recognizes her handling of operations while opening SMGCS during this pandemic. Assistant Superintendent, Ms. Mellisa Kasmeier, was on hand to present the award and express her appreciation.
Mrs. Behee has followed the same strict guidelines as they do in hospitals and as a result, no students were COVID positive from August 2020 to date. Her decision to close the SMGCS campus for two weeks after Christmas break helped to keep COVID cases off our campus.
Under her guidance, faculty and students have, until recently, been checking in daily with the Healthy Together App. We have all been washing hands, cleaning desks, and refilling hand sanitizer since August. Additionally, we are working tirelessly to ensure that students maintain social distance from each other in the hallways. We continue to provide students with masks when they forget theirs, as well as remind them to pull the mask up over their noses. And finally, we have been diligent in using screens to partition students in the classroom. All of these things were implemented by Mrs. Behee. Without her guidance and leadership our school year may have looked a lot different. We have been able to remain open and serve our students, all year, which is an amazing accomplishment.
We are so thankful for Mrs. Behee's excellence in leadership, dedication, loyalty and perseverance during a very stressful school year. Thank you for all you have done for SMGCS this year to keep us open and healthy.
