Class Dojo
Last week your child brought home information about Class Dojo. We will using this as our classroom management tool. The paperwork gave you instructions how to set up a parent account so you can monitor their behavior at home. Please set a parent account and return the signed portion of the paperwork.
Edmodo
If you have not signed up please do so. We will be using Edmodo in class daily going forward!
You will need to set up an account for both Mrs. Capelli class and my class.
My account set up information is class code: cid2ge
Mrs. Capelli's account set up is class code is: yujhxv
Make sure child is able to sign in on their own!! They will be the ones using it in class and I don't have their log in info if they forget it by the time they get to school. :)
Benchmark assessment: Discovery Education
This week your child will take the D.E. reading, math, and science test. These test will not be for a grade. They are simply to assess your student's current level in these areas. They will take these test 3 times this year before the FSA test to mark their progress throughout the year and predict their success in passing the FSA in the spring. Since they assess the students on 5th grade standards we expect the first test to be the lowest. This is normal. By winter we expect the scores to rise and by March we expect them to be even higher. These scores will be sent home as soon as we receive them (2-3 weeks) We will notify you if we feel additional help is required, but please don't hesitate to contact us with any concerns.
Social Studies
This week we will be finishing up our mapping and latitude/longitude study. We will have an assessment over this unit on Friday. Study SSH12-SSH19 for review and watch Edmodo for additional study materials.
ELA
Last week I was able to sit down with every student to assess their reading strengths and needs. Each student was assigned a reading level. As discussed at curriculum night students should be reading 25-35 minutes each night, depending on reading level and additional homework/study. This is on top of any other homework including any whole class novel studies we assign as homework. Students will we be reassessed at midterm and will be expected to show growth. What we do in the classroom will contribute towards this growth, but the students who diligently do their daily reading at home will show exponentially more growth this winter and at the end of the year then the students who read occasionally or hardly ever at home. Students were given a reading bingo sheet this week ( in the data notebook section of their binders ) that is required. This is to encourage students to read each night. Students who don't read at night will have an empty bingo sheet and will show little to no growth by the winter reassessment. Fifth graders need to make significant reading gains by the end of the year to comprehend the middle school content expected of them next year. Make sure your child has a book to read each and every night!
