Reading Tips

Mrs. Barbour's Class

  • When your child comes to a word he does not know, he needs strategies to attack the unknown word. Most parents automatically say, “Sound it out.” But that is not the best strategy for figuring out a word. Phonics rules don’t always work for figuring out (decoding) a word. Students need other strategies besides “sound it out” to read words. Click here for reading strategies to encourage at home. The website also has a free printable bookmark with reading strategies.

  • Check out Unite for Literacy where your child can read or listen to simple books. It is an online library with free books for new readers. Great website!

  • Don't forget Our kindergarten students are familiar with this website.
