Shepard News & Notes
September 29, 2016
Hello Shepard Families!
The year is motoring right along, and it is now time to begin planning for Shepard Student Portfolio Showcase on November 21 and 22. Please see the posting below for a description of the event and a link to register for a time slot.
Warm Regards,
John
1st Posting - Shepard Student Portfolio Showcase
Purpose: The purpose of Shepard’s Portfolio Night is for students to report to their
parent/guardian on their academic progress.
Context: Portfolio Night is one of many opportunities for parents/guardians to receive
information about the curriculum and their child’s progress. Portfolio Night compliments Open House--an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and hear about the curriculum--and is intended to provide additional progress reporting.
It is important to note that Portfolio Night is not meant to be a traditional parent-teacher conference. Due to scheduling constraints, it is not possible to offer individual conferences with each teacher in a format similar to elementary school. However, should you desire to meet with a teacher or team of teachers individually, please reach out to them directly. Teachers are very happy to conference with parents/guardians by phone or in person throughout the year.
Structure: In advance of portfolio night, students will work with their teachers to develop a
comprehensive portfolio that represents the very best of their coursework. With
the assistance of teachers, students will prepare a presentation of their work for parents/guardians.
Students and parents will select a time (see below) to meet at Shepard Middle School to review the portfolio. At the meeting, students and parents will be assigned to a classroom where the student’s Core teachers will be stationed. While the student will manage his/her presentation, Core teachers will be available should parents have specific questions best addressed by them. In addition, Encore staff will be available in designated locations to address any questions parents may have.
Timeline:
- September 29, 2016 Link opens for parents to schedule Portfolio Night time slot. Please note - you need to know your child’s team.
- November 18, 2016 Link to registration closes Friday before
- November 21 & 22, 2016 Portfolio Day/Night - November 21 (evening) & November 22 (daytime)

The Shepard Learning Commons Team is excited to share information about an event that will be happening in Shepard's Learning Commons on October 5-7: Shepard's Second Annual Cardboard Challenge! Inspired by Caine's Arcade, this three-day event inspires Shepard students to dream BIG and create anything they can imagine using simple items--cardboard and tape.
Last year our Learning Commons was transformed into a magical world that included boats, a pool, a roller coaster, suits of armor, a baseball field, and even "restaurant row" complete with Starbucks and pumpkin spice lattes. It was messy, it was creative, and it certainly was fun! All year long students asked when and if we would do that again, so we knew we needed to make this an annual event.
Here's where we can use your help to make this year's even even more successful than last year's:
DONATIONS
We could really use the following donated items:
- Rolls of tape--duct tape of all colors and clear packing tape (We used around 60 rolls of tape last year.)
- Clean boxes--moving boxes, appliance boxes, shoe boxes, food boxes (The bigger, the better!)
- Cardboard egg cartons
- Cardboard paper towel rolls and gift wrap rolls
VOLUNTEERS
We also would love to invite parents in as volunteers to help us keep the Cardboard Challenge organized while it's occurring and help us clean up when it has concluded. If you're interested and available to volunteer your time for either of these efforts, please fill out this volunteer form: http://bit.ly/2c5phYI
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our library information specialist, Andrea Trudeau, in the Learning Commons at atrudeau@dps109.org or (847)948-0620 ext. 5105.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting this year's Cardboard Challenge! We are excited to see what amazing creations the students come up with this year! (Be on the lookout for a time lapse video and photos on our Twitter at @Shepard_LC after the event to see what all they make!)
