Introducing New Words

When introducing new words...

  • Use kid-friendly definitions.
  • Just stick with the basics.

When should new words be introduced?

Spend 3 - 4 minutes during whole group when introducing new words.

When introducing new words, discuss the following:

  • How it relates to the current theme or other words that have already been introduced
  • The beginning letter and sound of the word
  • How it relates to their real life. Have they ever seen one? If so, where? Have they heard of it?
Allow the children to put the words up. Use it as an incentive - "The child who sites quietly during circle time will put today's word wall card up."
