NEWSFLASH
Unfortunately, we have made the decision to cancel our Matariki Celebration tomorrow night. We are making the call now as the weather isn't looking great and we want to give those who had intended to make the soup a heads-up sooner rather than later.
Whilst this is disappointing for our tamariki, the silver lining is our new playground is opening on Friday and both our kapa haka groups will perform a song at this ceremony.
I just wanted to say the BIGGEST thank you to those who offered to make soup! I really hope this hasn't put you out too much!!
This year's Matariki Celebration may not have gone as expected, but there's hope for next year. Hopefully, the weather will be more favourable, and we can host a fantastic event that really brings our community together once again.
Welcome to Term 3! This term is absolutely packed full of events, opportunities to connect and opportunities for our learners to shine in so many different ways. Please take careful note of the dates at the top of the newsletter so that you’re completely in the loop. We are so excited about the production ‘Slice of Paradise’, and practices are underway. I’m happy to report that the drumming that happens outside my window a couple of times a week has become very uniform and professional!
All of our teams have been immersed in Matariki and learning more about the individual stars, key messages and how the rising of Matariki informed our tangata whenua of the year ahead.
A warm Chelsea welcome to the newest members of our school whānau. We welcomed many of our new families at the pōwhiri last Friday. We have a group of international students who are learning with us for various amounts of time this term. They have settled in beautifully, and we are enjoying learning alongside them.
Another opportunity that we have coming up this term is that we are hosting a group of Korean teachers for a week. These teachers are on a tour of New Zealand and are visiting two schools to get a sense of education in our country. Teachers will be spread across the school and will not only be observing how a NZ school operates, they will have an opportunity to teach a lesson themselves.
A big welcome to Christopher and Melody, who have joined our Learning Assistant Team and are mostly working with Kakano Team, supporting our littlest learners. We are so happy to have you as part of our team!
Reporting and Learning Stories for Term 3
This term, we have our learner-led conferences happening in week 5. This is a chance for our tamariki to lead the conversation about their learning, what they are proud of, what they are working on and their successes and challenges. The sessions are 20 minutes each, and multiple whānau will be attending each session. Learners will have prompts and resources to help them share successfully, and teachers will support them where needed. It is important to have a mixture of opportunities for sharing, and this format follows our teacher-whānau sessions that happened last term.
Please click the link below to use the QR code book a session for your child/ren.
We have also linked an information sheet for you to have a read-through that should prepare you for what these sessions look like.
Teachers will continue to focus on updating Hero graphs and goals so that you have a clear idea of current goals and progress. Learning stories are not going to be written this term, as learner-led conferences are the opportunity for this sharing.
What are Learner-Led Conferences?
Production Tickets - A Slice of Paradise
We are excited to bring you our "Slice of Paradise" production this term! Tickets will be on sale from Monday 31st July.
Here is the information you need about ticket purchases - teachers will be in contact about costumes and class items separately.
Our venue is Birkenhead College Theatre and has limited seating. We will only be releasing tickets through the office (not via Kindo). We are aware that there has been a long hiatus between productions, and many whānau are wanting to come and support their child. We have decided to allocate a maximum of 3 tickets per whānau, with the remainder going into a first come, first served pool that will be released on the 14th of August - any tickets that have not been purchased at this point will become part of the pool. This means you have two weeks to purchase your allocated tickets. These tickets can be for any night. We will be supervising children behind the scenes, so you are able to drop off and pick up your child(ren) if you are not in the audience.
Anyone coming to watch the show will require a ticket - children wishing to attend to watch their older sibling/cousin/neighbour/best mate from Kindy are unable to sit on a caregiver's lap. If you have a child who wishes to attend a show, we suggest contacting us about attending a rehearsal during the day in the week before the show as an alternative. We will ensure someone records the show on Wednesday and Thursday in the event you miss out completely!
We have attached the cast list for the auditioned parts, so parents of these children are able to purchase tickets on a night when their child is performing- class items are every night.
Monday 28th August is an Open Dress Rehearsal. As we are using a school theatre, we are unable to access this during the day as Birkenhead College is using the theatre for their performing arts classes. As such, Monday night is the first chance we have to have a show in the actual venue. This option may suit you for your ticket allocation; however, please be aware that this will be an open dress rehearsal, as there are likely to be interruptions as we finalise placements/lighting and get used to the venue! We will have practised in our own hall, so we will have our fingers crossed it all transfers smoothly. However, tickets for this show are being sold at a reduced rate as this is a dress rehearsal.
Monday- $10
Wednesday and Thursday- $15
If you have any questions, please contact Rebecca Hedges (rebecca@chelsea.school.nz).
Toy Sale
Our Year 6 learners are heading to camp on the 24th of October. The cost of camp has continued to escalate over the years and is now more than $400 per learner! Our Year 6 crew have been hard at work planning fundraising opportunities so that the cost can be capped at $350 per child.
One of their fabulous ideas is to hold a used toy and book sale on the 3rd of August. The idea is that all of us have toys and books at home that are still in good condition but are taking up space and are not being played with anymore. If each of our families could have a look around at home and donate any good-quality toys and books, the Year 6 team would be very appreciative. There is a donation box in the office foyer for you to pop your bits and pieces into. On the 3rd of August, all of our learners are encouraged to bring along their pocket money or gold coins as they will have an opportunity to head down to the sale (in the hall) and purchase some treasures. Thanks Abigail and Emilia, for the fabulous posters!School Docs Review
We use School Docs as a tool to ensure that our school policies are regularly reviewed and updated in response to legislation changes. We encourage our whānau to read and comment on the policies that are up for review each term. Please see the policies that are due for review and the process for feeding back, below.

Playground
Playground
Great progress continues to be made on the installation of the playground, despite the weather challenges!
There are some finishing touches to be applied over the next two days, and then on Friday, the structure is handed over to us! YAY!
We invite you to a quick opening ceremony this Friday at 9.15 am on the courts in front of the playground. This will be very short and sweet, with a couple of speeches, and of course, a spot of ribbon cutting before the real business of playing on it can begin!
A massive thanks to the Krystal, the PTA, and the whole community who have supported fundraising efforts over the years to get to this point. A big thanks to the Board, particularly Katie, who has driven grant application work. The grant we have received allowed us to create an accessible play space using rubber matting rather than having a wooden surround with bark.
Assemblies this term
With show practices taking up a lot of time this term, we have decided to scale our assemblies back. We will be meeting (briefly) every second Friday morning (9.15am) to hand out DNA certificates and share any whole school notices. We will let you know if your child is receiving a DNA or Values certificate, and we welcome you to join us in celebrating each other. Classes won’t be presenting items this term. These assemblies will not be hosted by specific teams this term.
