Board To Board
News from the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Board of Education
Letter from BOE President, O.J. Sahler:
Happy New Year to you all!
As you can see, at its January 7 meeting, the W-FL BOCES Board of Education welcomed the New Year with two very significant celebrations: we appointed Dr. Vicma “Vicky” Ramos as our new District Superintendent to start on April 1, 2019, and we approved tenure status for seven of our very deserving teachers. It was a wonderful night to celebrate new beginnings.
As we celebrate the new, we also have to celebrate the wonderful community activities that marked the generosity of time and spirit of our students during the holidays. What do you think about the bus the auto body students at our Flint site remodeled for Family Promise of Ontario County? Or the nine families that benefitted from the Holiday Collection of food, clothing, and presents spearheaded by the Finger Lakes Secondary School staff and students? Probably the best part of both projects was hearing and accepting the thanks and praise from those they were able to help! And we, teachers, staff, and the Board, can’t help but feel great pride.
But those projects were only two of many. Our students provided holiday meals, rang bells for the Salvation Army, decorated doors, celebrated literacy, and provided special parties for special people.
These are just a few of the countless opportunities for service learning available to our students, not only at holiday time, but throughout the year. Our communities are blessed to have such a wealth of caring students willing to go the extra mile to contribute to the sense of sharing and fellowship that make our neighbors feel welcome, and cared for and about.
If you haven’t visited a BOCES site recently, do visit one soon to see what we have to offer. If you have a high school student in your family, consider some of the career and technical education courses available in carpentry, computer technology, child care, conservation, cosmetology, culinary arts and criminal justice -- and those are only the courses that begin with the letter C!
The entire BOCES Board joins me in wishing you a healthy and happy new year filled with success for all your students and staff. Please don’t hesitate to take advantage of the many BOCES services that can help you achieve your school district goals for 2019.
As always, be in touch with suggestions that will make what BOCES has to offer even better.

Auto Body Students Remodel Donated Bus for Local Non-Profit
Students in the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Auto Body Program at Finger Lakes
Technical and Career Center were thrilled when Jill McLellan contacted them to collaborate on a project. McLellan, a volunteer with Family Promise of Ontario County, was looking for help with a very particular project. She would need students with hands-on Auto Body experience to remodel and transform a school bus into a more fitting transportation vehicle for Family Promise of Ontario County.
This non-profit organization aims to help families in Ontario County become sustainably
independent. Families utilizing the services offered by the organization often need
transportation between the Day Center and Host Congregations. That’s when the collaboration came together.
Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES students and staff were eager to get involved when they heard of
the project. “It was easy to agree, almost an instant reaction,” said Josh Rossi, instructor with
the FLTCC Auto Body program. Students were excited, not only to have a big project to work on, but to be involved in something bigger than just remodeling a vehicle. Rossi said students
worked hard on transforming the school bus into a passenger vehicle, more fitting for the
service it was providing. Throughout the process, students removed the stop sign, lights,
“School Bus” insignia, and stripes, and gave the bus a new look with custom panels made of
diamond plate aluminum. They also painted front and rear headers, along with side sections.
McLellan gathered with students last Friday to thank them and show her appreciation. “The bus looks awesome and was immediately put to use,” she said. All in all, it was a project with a quick turn-around time so services were able to be offered immediately. It is now not just a
vehicle, but a vehicle for opportunity and success.
