Contrastive structure is showing that you are talking about two different subjects by placing them and shifting from side to side towards the directed subject.

Sentence #1

English: I like dogs not cats.

Gloss: Dogs (shift left) they, cats (shift right) they, (shift left) dogs I like (shift right) cats I don't like

Sentence #2

English: I have a brother and a sister.

Gloss: Brother (shift left) the, sister (shift right) she, I have.

Sentence #3

English: I have geometry 1st and science 3rd.

Gloss: Class, geometry 1st (shift right), science 3rd (shift left.)
