January 2017 Newsletter
December was filled with many great moments!
A big thank-you goes to our Parent Council volunteers and Julie Cameron and her culinary students from Bayridge SS for a delicious Christmas Dinner. It is wonderful to have such a dedicated group of parents!
Also, a huge thank-you to Crystal McCracken, who coordinated the Gift Room, and her team of volunteers. It was priceless to watch the excitement of students as they "shopped" for their loved ones!
Our Cardboard Challange was a great way to launch our new maker space! Thank you to parent council for your generous donation that allowed us to buy Makedo Cardboard Building Kits. Students were highly engaged! lt gave them opportunities to collaborate, learn, and build things to solve problems using design thinking by tapping into their creativity and imagination. This challenge also taught critical thinking, resourcefulness, perseverance, and communication skills. Check out the video link below to see the Learning in Limestone segment on CKWS news!

FInally, I would like to share that we raised over $600 for Ronald McDonald House in the name of Parker Simpson, a local 8 year old boy. A big thank you goes to our community. Thanks to Paige M for the idea. Well done Jayhawks!
It's been a great start back to school. I wish all our students a new year filled with lots of learning and happiness.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to share.
Sincerely,
Heather Campbell,
Principal

Math: Myths & Facts
Myth: The math my child is learning in school is “new.”
Facts: Your child is learning the same math facts and formulas you did—such as 2+2 = 4, and the circumference of a circle is 2pr. But the way math is taught has evolved in recent decades. Today’s math learning emphasizes the development of understanding of concepts and skills, so that your child is able to apply these confidently in new situations. It also focuses on developing critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. Your child is learning some topics and skills that you may not have learned in elementary school. These include data management and probability, and how to use calculators and computers to help model and solve math problems. What your child is learning in math class, and how your child is learning, are equipping your child for success in today’s knowledge-based economy and our global world.
Myth: Now that we have calculators, students don’t need to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, nor do they need to memorize the “math facts” (such as 7 X 6 = 42).
Fact: Knowing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide are essential math skills and a major emphasis in the Ontario math curriculum. Automatic recall of math facts is needed in higher-level math. Games where children need to keep track of a score or that require automatic recall of math facts are a fun way to practise. Look for opportunities where your child can develop fluency. It takes time. This is a key area where you can help your child at home, by encouraging lots of practise in a variety of ways.

IS MY BUS CANCELLED OR DELAYED TODAY?
Buses may be delayed or cancelled for a number of reasons such as mechanical problems or inclement weather. Delays or cancellations are posted on the website www.triboard.ca. These delays and cancellations may be viewed by parents/guardians or school administration by going to our website and clicking on our Cancellations & Delays icon. You may sign up for direct notification of delays and cancellations by going to our Delays and Cancellations tab near the top of our webpage. You may also follow Triboard on Facebook or Twitter.
Dress for the Weather!!!
Schools within the Limestone District School Board follow the guidance of KFL&A Public Health. When a cold weather alert or warning is issued, each school will take appropriate precautions that may include keeping children indoors for recess. Generally, if the temperature is forecast to be -25C or -28C with the windchill, children are kept inside. The Principal, however, always has discretion. It's important to note, also, that decisions are made on a case-by-case basis as weather conditions can vary greatly within our district.
Information can be found on the home page of LDSB website under Inclement Weather Guidelines in the Front and Centre section.
Family Literacy Day January 27th
Family Literacy Day is celebrated in homes and at early years programs, schools and libraries on January 27. Make a special effort on January 27 to have 15 minutes of fun learning together. Practising literacy together every day has tremendous benefits for both children and parents. Here are some ideas:
- Read a "wake-up" story onthe morning (after reading a bedtime story the night before)
- Search online for fun places to go in the community.
- Find a new recipe to use or make up a new recipe togeher and post it online
- Make shopping lists
- Tell jokes while doing the dishes
- Create a story together as a family, each person writes one sentences, then read the whole story aloud when done
- Write a review of a book you've read. Send it to the author or post in online.
- Organize a book swap at the school or with friends
- Help your family use online and paper maps to get around town and when you go on trips.
- Make a popsicle stick model or build something out of cardboard.
- Play a board game together.
- Look up the words to your favourite song(s).
