Residency Determination Service
The Residency Determination Service is a new system implemented by the state of North Carolina to determine if students qualify for in-state or out of state tuition. As stated by the College Foundation, Inc. (2017), NC Residency Determination System, "enables a student to use one residency determination for admissions applications to multiple North Carolina public and private colleges and universities and to demonstrate residency for state aid programs consideration at all (public and private) North Carolina colleges and universities."
When completing the Residency Determination System it is crucial to be accurate so that you do not receive a denial. Here are some common mistakes:
- Moving too fast
- Incorrect information (name, date of birth, and SSN)
- Skip questions or not answering questions
- Provide inaccurate or guess answers
- Not providing parent/guardian information
- Not submitting required documents
- Not finishing admissions application after RDS
- Not completing a Reconsideration or Appeal (if needed)
- Not asking or help
(College Foundation, Inc., 2017)
Once you complete the RDS, you will receive a code that you will use on your college applications (College Foundation, Inc., 2017). For more information, about RDS, please visit: www.ncresidency.org.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is used to determine need-based financial aid which helps students pay for college. The FAFSA is not just for students attending a 4 year college or university but for students planning to attend a 2 year college and/or trade school. Financial Aid may come in a variety of ways, scholarships, grants, Federal Work Study, or even loans. The FAFSA is one way to determine the type and amount of financial aid students may qualify for. The FAFSA is now open (Oct. 1) and available for students and parents to complete. Please be sure to check the financial aid webpages of colleges and universities to ensure the FAFSA is submitted by the college's priority filing date. Before completing the FAFSA, be sure to get a FSA ID for you and a parent.
