From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
I hope you enjoyed last week’s suggestions on questioning DURING Reading. As promised, here are some questions you can ask your child DURING the reading of the story. Put them together with the BEFORE Reading questions shared previously, and you can build a great conversation around a great story this weekend!
During Reading: Predict, Infer, Connect, Visualize, Summarize, Monitor
Predict: What do you think will happen next? Why? How do you think the character will handle this situation?
Infer: What do you think the character did _____? How do you know? What emotions is the character feeling? How do you know?
Connect: What would you have done if you were the character? Has anything like this ever happened to you?
Visualize: As you’ve been reading, what pictures have been in your mind? Tell me what you were imagining in your mind as you read that line/paragraph/page.
Summarize: Can you put what you just read in your own words? What’s happened to this character so far? Tell me the most important things you’ve read in order.
Monitor Comprehension: Is this making sense to you? Wait, what’s going on here?
Do you need to reread that part? What does this word mean? Where did you get stuck?
From the Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Sims
Each class is learning how to help stop bullying using the 3 R's.
The first R stands for RECOGNIZE. With our students being such young ages, we try to present these lessons with vocabulary that they are familiar with. Students can recognize bullying by asking themselves three questions:
1. Is this person being mean on purpose? If the answer is yes, ask the next question.
2. Does it happen over and over? If the answer is yes, ask the third question.
3. Am I able to make it stop? No? Then it may be bullying.
Our next lesson will teach our students how to REPORT bullying.
Don't forget to wear BLUE on Mondays in October!
From the Home-School Facilitator, Mrs. Mucha
In light of the recent tragedy in Las Vegas, I wanted to offer some helpful hints on how to help your child after a tragic event:
•Do your best to keep the television off, or at least limit how much your child sees of any news event.
•Try to keep yourself calm. Your presence can help your child feel more secure.
•Give your child extra comfort and physical affection, like hugs or snuggling up together with a favorite book. Physical comfort goes a long way towards providing inner security. That closeness can nourish you, too.
•Try to keep regular routines as normal as possible. Children and adults count on their familiar pattern of everyday life.
•Plan something that you and your child enjoy doing together, like taking a walk, going on a picnic, having some quiet time, or doing something silly. It can help to know there are simple things in life that can help us feel better, in good times and in bad.
•Even if children don't mention what they've seen or heard in the news, it can help to ask what they think has happened. If parents don't bring up the subject, children can be left with their misinterpretations. You may be really surprised at how much your child has heard from others.
•Focus attention on the helpers, like the police, firemen, doctors, nurses, paramedics, and volunteers. It's reassuring to know there are many caring people who are doing all they can to help others in this world.
•Let your child know if you're making a donation, going to a town meeting, writing a letter or e-mail of support, or taking some other action. It can help children to know that adults take many different active roles and that we don't give in to helplessness in times of worldwide crisis.
