  • Johnson took over after JFK assassinated
  • tried to associate himself with JFK popularity
  • Democrat Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater in lopsided victory
  • 6th-most lopsided victory in American history
  • He won 44 states and 486 electoral votes

The Great Society

  • Democratic reform
  • Passed Civil rights bill of JFK
  • Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 signed. Job Corps was established, LBJ declared a War on Poverty
  • Medicare, Wilderness Protection Act, voting rights etc.

24th Amendment

  • Proposed to the States in 1962 and ratified the following year
  • prohibited government from conditioning the right to vote
  • Many states today still have not passed the amendment
  • Texas did in 2002

Tonkin Gulf Resolution

  • Passed 1964
  • Gave LBJ authority to use military force in Southeast Asia
  • only had two votes opposed

  • Belief in domino effect made LBJ fight communism
  • After Tonkin Gulf Resolution sent thousands of troops to Southeast Asia
  • The begun Americas involvement in the war
  • worried about external communist intervention

Civil Rights

  • Outlawed discrimination of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin
  • It was to guarantee all citizens equal protection of 14th and 15th ammendment
  • imposing of any "voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure in a manner which results in a denial or abridgement of the right to vote on account of" race or language minority was made illegal
