News from Dr. Wachel
With Thanksgiving just a few days away, now is the perfect time to pause and reflect upon all of the many things we are grateful for in our school family. First and foremost, we are grateful for all of the children who enter our doors every single day. They bring so much joy into the halls, sharing their laughter, smiles, strengths, and unique gifts. They are the sole purpose of our work and the reason why we keep our sights on making sure we provide a safe and healthy environment where each Bear is engaged, challenged, and supported. It is truly an honor to serve these precious students, and I am grateful to our families for allowing us the opportunity.
Next, I am grateful for the Madison team. They are dedicated to our purpose and work relentlessly in their pursuit of serving children, families, and each other. They remain focused upon Madison's goals, as well as make learning fun, exciting, real, and relevant. They are creative, innovative and strive for continual professional improvement. They inspire me on a daily basis, and I am incredibly grateful for our team. And, above all else, I am grateful they teach and lead from their heart.
Additionally, I am grateful for the Madison community. I am grateful to our community for their commitment as we partner together to serve children in a safe, respectful, loving, and inclusive manner. We are grateful for our community’s investment in helping us serve children and achieve our goals.
Finally, I am grateful to our Madison families for your endless support of our learning community. You send the most important people in your lives - your precious children - to our school each and every day. I am grateful for the trust and faith you have placed in our team as well as for the collaborative partnership we share. We are beyond blessed to have families who believe in our purpose and support our mission, vision, and goals. Thank you for supporting our team and sharing hope with us as we look ahead and strive to provide each and every child with an amazing learning opportunity. We are blessed to have you on our team.
It is clear there is much to be grateful for in our school family. And, as we head into Thanksgiving break, I am grateful to have the opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving! It is my hope that you enjoy time with family and friends, and I wish you much health, happiness, love, and joy!

Lunch Menu
Just a reminder... Although school meals are free for the 2021-2022 school year, students are still welcome to bring a lunch from home as they desire. Please note that although these students will still be permitted to purchase milk or juice ($0.55 each) to accompany their lunch from home, these individual items are not covered by the program. Only complete meals are available for free. Weekly balance reminders are sent to families whose students' account balances fall below zero due to these types of purchases.

News from the Health Room
As we enter into Fall/Winter, it is a great time to remind our school community of the measures we take to keep students healthy and prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
We reinforce frequent hand washing with our students and coughing/sneezing into a tissue or their sleeve (not their hands).
In addition, we refer to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) recommendations when determining the need to send a student home from school (see attached document). The JCDHE recommendation chart provides specific guidance on when a student can be readmitted to school.
For example, students are to be fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Occasionally we receive questions about head lice management in our schools, and we have an extensive set of resources on our website that can be found HERE.
As needed, we will inform parents when we see an increase in illnesses in our school population with the potential for rapid spread among students and staff (such as influenza) or in the rare instance we have a mandatory reportable disease occur in our population, like Mumps. General head lice notifications are not recommended as they have been found to cause harm and lead to unnecessary treatment. Instead, the school nurse will assess the need for notification on an individual basis to those considered close contacts.
Thank you for reinforcing healthy habits with our students. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (913) 856-0450.
