February is Box Tops for Education Collection Month
Last chance to send in Box Tops!! Parents, raid your kitchen junk drawers for those valuable little cardboard squares and send them in. The little coupons can be found on Kleenex, General Mills products, Ziploc bags and other products you probably buy already. Simply cut them off the box, trim them neatly and have your child bring them to school in a Ziploc bag. The collection bin is in the office. Also, please make sure the dates are not expired.
PTC Newsflash
The next PTC meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 6th, at 6:30pm in the Idea Lab (school library).

Inside the Idea Lab with Mrs. Stephens
This week in Idea Lab we started a project that will continue through next week. In honor of
“Tell a Fairy Tale Day” on February 26, we read fairy tales and discussed the problems the characters faced in the stories. As a class we discussed new creative ways to solve the characters’ problems, then alone or in small groups we set out to bring our ideas to life using such items as our large foam blocks, Legos, Magna-Tiles, drawing supplies, and other building and craft materials.
For example, in Kindergarten we read The Gingerbread Man and students had to choose a problem encountered by the gingerbread man, the fox, or the other characters. One student chose the problem of the gingerbread man escaping the oven, so he built an escape-proof oven out of Legos. In first grade, we read The Three Little Pigs and chose a problem that either the wolf or pigs faced. One group wanted to help the wolf catch the third pig, so they created a Magna-Tile trap to catch it. Other groups wanted to help the pigs build stronger houses, so they built a home out of blue foam blocks with a security system including surveillance cameras and obstacles to keep out the wolf.
Second through fifth grades worked alone or in small groups and read a variety of fairy tales. After choosing a fairy tale to work with, they had to identify a problem, brainstorm a solution, choose a medium, and finally build their creative solution out of their chosen medium. Some examples included a group that built a stronger chair so Goldilocks wouldn’t break the bears’ furniture, and an individual who is creating a Pancake Boy that animals won’t be tempted to eat. They will continue to work on their projects next Monday and Thursday. Many students checked out their fairy tale books to take home, so please encourage them to read their story again and think more about their characters’ problems and possible twenty-first century solutions. Keep those ideas coming!
