Math- UNIT 2 - Problem Sloving

This week we will work on:
• Determining which strategy to use when solving word problems
• Using keywords in a word problem to help decide which strategy to use to solve the problem.
• Use mental strategies to add and subtract number within 20
We will also:
• Practice with the 8 Mathematical Practices
• Continue to use AMPS to solve word problems
• AMP's is a school-wide problem solving strategy that I had the honor of helping to create. AMPS stands for:
A - Analyze (Read the problem carefully and come up with a plan
M - Make Connections (Decide whether you will need to add, subtract, multiply or divide
P - Persevere (To never give up. After 3 tries ask the teacher for help
S- Solve the problem using the 8 Mathematical Strategies

Reading- Unit 2 - Characters Respond to Challenges
• Continue our work with story elements (Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, and End)
• Determine the problem and solution in a problem.
• Identifying the Author's Purpose of writing a story
In Writing- we will:
• Continue to add the components of Writer's Workshop with a focus on Small Moments, and writing Mechanics (Capital Letters and Punctuation Marks.
• Using graphic organizers (Circle Map and Flow Map) to help plan a story.
• Learn about the different types of details that writers can include in their stories to help make them interesting to read.
• Attend writing conference with Mrs. Barber to begin work on our first BIG published piece of writing. The children are REALLY excited about this! :-)

Science- - Weather
• We will discuss the different types of weather and how they can impact our day.
• I will introduce the different types of clouds (cumulus, cumulonimbus, stratus, and cirrus.)
Social Studies- Continue our Citizenship unit and what it means to be a good citizen at school, in our community, and in the world.

Spelling - Follow the Words Their Way homework calendar

Math - 15 minutes of Dreambox practice and study your math facts.
Nightly Reading - Read and complete a book slip. (Monday - Wednesday)
iReady - Thursday night only (2 lessons)

Show and Tell Reminders

• The item to be shared should be in a bag along with two clues about the item.
• Please make sure your child's name is visible from the outside of the bag.
• Please do not send fragile items.
• Show and tell counts as a homework grade.
• Show and tell will be held on Friday of each week unless otherwise indicated in the agenda.

WORDS THEIR WAY INFORMATION

The children love practicing their Words Their Way spelling words at the Word Work station. The children practice working with their words at school each day during our Reading block as well.The children will have their 1st "spell check" on Friday, October 21st. The children will receive points for spelling, placing the word under the correct header (sorting), and their ability to use the word correctly in a sentence. Happy sorting practice! :-)

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

I will be conducting parent teacher conferences from Monday, October 10th - Friday, October 28th. I will discuss your child's progress and go over the testing data from our recent Discovery Math test and the Reading 3-D assessments. Conference confirmations were sent home a couple of weeks ago. If you need to reschedule your conference for any reason, please let me know. I look forward to meeting with each of you. I am very pleased with the growth the children have made from the beginning of the year to now. They are ON THE BALL! :-)

W.R. ODELL DRAGON PRIDE NIGHT

W.R. Odell K-2 Dragon Pride Night featuring bingo and baskets will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 6:30-9:00. Bingo begins at 7:15 followed by our classroom basket raffles. One of the highlights of night is the Classroom Basket Raffle! Each year your student's class selects a theme and creates a gift basket related to that theme and it is raffled off at the end of the night.
Baskets will be displayed in the media center for all of our students to see before Dragon Pride Night. All students, parents, family, and friends will have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for \$1.00 during our presale and at our Ticket Sales table the night of Dragon Pride Night, You can purchase as many tickets as you like and place them in any of our basket collection containers. Drawings will start following the first round of bingo and the WINNER MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN.
A special THANK YOU to Mrs. Paladino who has volunteered to help with our class basket. She will collect money and/or items that will be donated, shop for any additional items with the money collected and help with the assembly of our class basket.
We would like each student to make a donation to our basket. You may donate in the following ways:
• Give a donation of \$5.00 or more (cash only please) *If you would like to send in a cash donation, please do so y Thursday, October 27th.
• Purchase an item or items that relate to our theme *If you plan to send in an item(s) for the basket, please do so by Monday October 31st.
