Spotlight on Specials
Mashburn Elementary
GOALS of the Mashburn Specials Team this year:
To make ties in our classes to support the grade level's curriculum whenever possible
STEM Special
STEM has been filled with collaboration and problem-solving this month!
In Kindergarten, students have been learning about the connection between reading and STEM. Each day, they have been listening to a different version of The Three Little Pigs and discussing the similarities and differences. To build on their foundational knowledge of engineering and connect STEM to the story, they built strong and sturdy houses using various building materials.
In 4th Grade, students worked through the engineering design process in their teams to come up with a clean water solution based on the problem in the book, The Water Princess. There were so many great ideas ranging from water wells to transportable water containers with attached filtration systems. These 4th Graders are definitely on the path to making a big and positive impact in our world!
PE Special
We have had a great start to the new school year in the gym. Students have learned expectations of the gym and physical education. We have also had a lot of fun working on our throwing and catching skills, chasing and fleeing skills, as well as our dodging skills. We have also improved our different areas of physical fitness; which include flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance. In this upcoming unit we will work on our soccer skills of dribbling, passing, kicking, and shooting. During the different games we will strategize and work as a team to be successful. As always, please encourage your child to get as much activity as they can each day. The CDC recommends at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

In first grade, students studied their map skills with the book Me on the Map. Students made their own Me on the Map flipbook! They also were able to visualize how small they are compared to the world as we explored their continent, country, state, city, and school using Google Earth.
In fifth grade, we reviewed constructive and deconstructive forces. Students were challenged to make a video explaining how a volcano is both a constructive and deconstructive force.
For fun, they competed in a Google Earth Scavenger hunt where they were given clues to find volcanoes around the world.
Third grade created visuals of common idioms and what it would look like if this figurative expression was literal! They giggled as they created presentations with people actually in a pickle or literally holding horses!
