February News
From the Principal's Desk
It is very hard to believe that it is already February. We are excited for Valentine’s Day parties this month. Please contact your child’s teacher for more information if you are interested in helping out.
Last month we reached the 100th day of school. The 100th day of school was on January 26th. We decorated shirts with 100 different objects and participated in many other fun 100 day activities. Be sure to ask how your child celebrated 100 days of school.
Parent Teacher Conferences are coming soon in March! Please look for communication to come home from your child's teacher.
Mission Moberly
A team of over 70 students, parents, and staff have been meeting to design the future of Moberly Public Schools. The Mission Moberly team has focused on five areas for improvement and have been working to create a plan to address the priorities of the school district over the next five years. As a member of the Moberly community, we need your help in ensuring we have considered all the important topics when creating the plan. Please take a few moments to provide input on issues you think are most important in the areas below. Our goal is to achieve excellence for all -- each student in each classroom. Thank you for your help in identifying our most critical priorities.

Library News
During the month of February, first and second students will be reading the Show Me Award nominees. These ten books are selected by Missouri school librarians. All Missouri first, second and third graders will vote on their favorite and the winner will be announced at the Missouri Association of School Librarians conference in the spring. For older children there is the Mark Twain Award (grades 4-6), The Truman Award (grades 6-8), and the Gateway Award (high school). Mr. Katcher, the North and South Park librarian, has written a book that has been nominated for that last award. Stop by your local library and check out some of these nominees!

Title News
Does your child understand what they read? How do you know? A reading skill we work on in 1st and 2nd grade that helps your child with comprehension is to “retell” the story after having read it. Learning to “retell” a story is an important step in the comprehension process for beginning readers. When giving a retelling, we want children to include the names of the characters, the setting, all important story events, and some important details about those events. We want children to tell events in order, and to “borrow” SOME of the IMPORTANT vocabulary the author may have used in the story. Having your child think about the story in three chunks… “beginning, middle, and end” is a strategy for retelling. Filling in the story frame “Somebody…..wanted…..but….so …..” can also help in developing your child’s retelling skills. Spending time retelling with your child what the story is about is a great way to build comprehension. Thanks!
