Learner Profile for February
The learner profile that is being highlighted during the month of February is the character trait of being a thinker. Students exhibiting this trait use their skills to think critically and creatively and come up with ideas. We look forward to all of the thinking that will occur at Rose Glen as we highlight this important character trait!
Valentine's Day
We will be having our classroom valentine parties next Wednesday afternoon. In advance of our party, please have your child bring in a valentine mailbox (already decorated). An adult-size shoebox is the perfect size. You can decorate with construction paper, wrapping paper, fabric, stickers, ribbons or other embellishments! Be creative! Please make sure to cut a 2”x 6” slot in the top to fit the cards.
Please send Valentines and mailboxes to school by Monday, February 12th, so we can begin passing out our cards. Thank you!
Language Workshop
This week we began Unit 4 in Language Workshop, a unit that focuses on investigation. The initial book in this unit was a nonfiction book that provided us with some important background information. We discussed the meaning of the words investigate, experiment, observe and facts. In upcoming weeks we will read stories about characters who learn through investigation.
Literacy
We have been working on vowel sounds. We've learned that the vowels make two sounds, a short sound and a long sound. The short vowel sounds are quite similar to each other so we have been spending time learning to distinguish the slight differences in the short vowels and to recognize and identify the short vowel sound in words.
Just a reminder that at the end of the 2nd trimester (the first week of March), kindergarten students should be able to read 25 of more of the high frequency words. We are impressed with how many kindergartners are able to do this. Thank you for your continued support and practice at home!
High Frequency Words
There are 40 high frequency words that kindergarten students in the School District of Waukesha are expected to be able to read by the end of the school year. To stay on track for mastery of all 40 words, it is recommended that students be able to read between 20 and 25 words at this time of year. Have you checked lately to see how is your child doing? Did he/she meet this goal?
To help you practice the words with your child at home we have included the document below. The highlighted words are those we have worked on at school. We will update the list as new words are introduced.
Math Workshop
Being able to count to 100 by both 1s and 10s are end of the year expectations for kindergarten students. Recently we learned how to count by 10s to 100. Has your child counted by 10s for you yet?
IMPORTANT: If your child is not yet able to count to 100 by 1s independently and successfully, please be sure to practice often.
We have been revisiting addition and subtraction these past few weeks. We have been practicing solving math story problems. listening carefully to see if we will need to add or subtract.

Rose Glen online directory
Another important reason you may want to be included in the directory is to give your child the opportunity to be invited to birthday parties or other gatherings with classmates, since neither the teachers nor the office staff is able to share contact information with you. Hopefully you have already signed up for the family directory. If you have not, please take a few minutes to do so.
