Interim Superintendent's Update
Good evening, School Leaders of the Diocese of Cleveland,
Please pray for Bishop Perez and his fellow U.S. Bishops who are joining together in fasting and prayer this week in advance of the upcoming bishops’ general assembly.
Speaking of gathering, our team is hard at work putting the final preparations together for the Principals Leadership Conference, November 14-16 at Kalahari. We look forward to seeing many of you there.
One business reminder: please take a moment to update your registry for the Official Catholic Directory. The publisher (NRP/Direct, a.k.a. Kenedy) sent an email recently to your school contact, and I followed with one Friday with general instructions in case you need it. Among other things, this list of Catholic organizations recognized by the USCCB makes official our tax exempt status. So please be sure to update.
Finally, don’t forget to head to the polls and vote Tuesday (if you have not already) and keep our nation, state, and local municipalities in our prayers.
All the best to you for a blessed week.
Frank

When Law Enforcement Comes to Schools
Immigration continues to be in the news, and we have been asked the question, what should a school do in the event that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers (ICE) should approach our schools. We put the question to our resident immigration expert, Sister Rita Mary Harwood, SND, who heads the Secretariat for Parish Life and Development, as well as our diocesan legal team.
Sr. Rita Mary pointed out that such interactions are unlikely since schools are considered “sensitive locations” in practice, though not by any specific law or policy. However, in the event that ICE, or any law enforcement should appear, she and our legal team advise that a similar approach should be taken to any non-parent visitors, who should never enter a school without the permission of the principal or designee.
We should never allow a person (law enforcement or otherwise) to meet with a child without the permission of a parent or guardian.
We should never make a child’s records available without parent permission.
The diocesan legal office stands ready to assist. In the event you find yourself speaking with any law enforcement unexpectedly, call the diocesan legal office, who can walk with you through the interaction. We aim to be partners with all law enforcement, especially our local safety forces, but also state and federal officials, yet we balance this partnership with our duty to parents and guardians, our primary partners in the formation of their children.

Research Based Intervention #2 - Florida Center for Reading Research
The Florida Center for Reading Research (http://www.fcrr.org/index.html) has a mission to disseminate information about research-based practices related to literacy instruction and assessment for children in Pre-K through 12th grade. To this end, FCRR has provided a selection of resources and materials of particular interest to education practitioners. Go to the VPK Learning Center Activities and Student Activities sections under Resources to download a number of classroom activities developed by teachers at FCRR for use in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms and pedagogical information for empowering teachers with the skills and knowledge for effective instruction in the classroom.

The Cleveland Play House brings an educational Classroom Matinee, directly to your schools. Their bully prevention production 'Kicked' has been most popular. Schools have the option of the hour-long, assembly-style presentation only, or a show and in-classroom workshops. Each production is aligned with state standards and has a Teacher Guide with in-class activities. Every student receives a Family Guide to take home. For more information, please contact
