Principally Speaking

Happy Friday to all of you! Spring is coming! I know it doesn't quite feel like it yet, but it IS coming!

We had another wonderful week at DCMS. We are quickly approaching the end of quarter 3 which will be next Friday, March 8. Grades will be posted for parent and student viewing on Monday, March 11th at 3:30 PM.

Below is an article regarding internet safety. Please take the time to read it and discuss the topic with your children. It appears that some of our students have seen the "MOMO Challenge" video and have expressed concern. We want to equip you with knowledge in order to help your student and other parents as appropriate. Please, please discuss this with your student.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Internet Safety

A recent internet concern caused a handful of students to visit elementary counselors this week. It’s always important to be aware of what your students are viewing online. The recent concern is called the “MOMO Challenge”, a game where the character on a video encourages the viewer to partake in dangerous challenges. While it has been around for a couple years, recently it has reportedly popped up embedded within some children’s videos on YouTube and even YouTube Kids. The first link below provides some helpful tips for engaging your student in a conversation about this concern. This resource may also be helpful when navigating the internet with your student. The second link below contains for the 7 questions to help you start a conversation with your child about online safety.

So, please mark your calendars and before you head off to bed Saturday evening, move your clocks forward one hour. Should Your Middle School Child Date? Form Your Own Opinion After Reading the Article Below

How Can Parents Help Us with Attendance?

When your child is sick

  • Only let your child stay home if he/she is truly sick. Sometimes complaints of a headache or stomach ache might be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home. Contact the school counselor for support if you think this might be happening.
  • The Sick Day Guidelines for Families may be helpful if you are not sure if you should keep your child at home due to illness. See the guideline using the link below.

Appointments and vacations

  • Make every effort to schedule doctor, dentist, and other appointments after school hours.
  • If your child must be out of school for an appointment, get him/her back to school for at least part of the school day.
  • Plan vacations when school is not in session.

Spring Pictures

Spring Pictures will be taken on March 19th. This is the picture cycle in which students can bring in props like stuffed animals, helmets, favorite uniforms, etc.

National School Breakfast Week

Parents, March 4th-8th is National School Breakfast Week. This week was started in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the school breakfast program. Danville schools offer breakfast at all grade levels. At our elementary schools, the students take a grab and go breakfast from the cafeteria and then eat in the classrooms. This allows the students more time to finish eating without rushing. At the middle and high school, there are up to 10 different entrees to choose from, including different breakfast sandwiches, cereals, breakfast bars, and french toast. All of our items are whole grain rich and cereals are reduced sugar. Breakfast prices are $1.50 or $.40 for reduced. Meals come with an entree, fruit, juice, and milk. To celebrate National School Breakfast Week, new breakfast entrees will be featured throughout the week.
