Student Services - February 2021
This Month Is All About YOU!
Self-Love, Self-Care, and You
Are you taking care of yourself? Did you know there are two ways to take care of yourself? Self-care is the act of taking care of yourself physically and mentally; self-love is about cultivating gratitude and acceptance toward yourself, physically and emotionally. They are both necessary to have a heathy, fulfilled life.
There are a number of things to do for self-care. Here are a few that captured our interests.
1. Take a nap. Find a comfy place and drift off into dream land. Set a timer if you are worried about sleeping too much. Remember do NOT do this in class.
2. Take a soothing bath.
3. Take a walk in the sun. We live near the beach and have many parks. Enjoy the great outdoors.
4. Have a good laugh, or have a good cry. Let your feelings show.
5. Journal and self-reflect. Sometimes you just need to write it down to get it out. If you are happy with letting it go, throw it away!
6. Take a break from social media. Clear your mind. Social media is addictive. Just 24 hours away helps!
7. Create a simple to-do list. Are you unorganized? Are you stressed? Are you missing assignments? Find someplace you can refer to a list. Sticky Notes on your computer helps!
Let's talk about self-love. Simply put it is a state of appreciation for oneself; having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. As with self-care, there are a few things you can do for self-love.
1. Talk to and about yourself with love. Do not SHAME yourself.
2. Make you the priority.
3. Trust yourself, and with that, trust your instincts.
4. Be nice to yourself.
5. Set healthy boundaries. Turn off your phone or set down time. Being available all the time can be exhausting!
6. Listen to your body. It can tell you to slow down, relax, or reprioritize.
7. Eat healthy. But it is OK to indulge in your favorite foods occasionally.
Both self-care and self-love have one key common word, self. I am not telling you to be selfish or unhelpful, but if you are not right in your own body or your own mind, it is harder to give others help. Remember, take care of yourself and in turn, you can help others take care of themselves.
