Fremont Unified School District thanks the Thornton staff, students, families, contractors and community members for their partnership and patience while the campus is under construction.

Summer Updates
Campus Closed Over Summer
Summer Construction Activities
Work to be completed over the summer includes:
- Installation of a marquee, volleyball courts, exterior lighting and a shade structure
- Upgrade traffic lane at south entrance, and completion of the east parking lot/drop-off area
- Landscaping and concrete work around New Science Buildings
- Modernization of the current office building, small gym, big gym, locker rooms and portables
- Modernization and roof restoration of buildings 3-7
- Construction on New Administration/Library Building
Current Projects
New Administration/Library Building
The new administration and library building is located at the front and center of campus.
Work completed in recent weeks includes:
- Exterior flashing installation
- Drywall installation in elevator shaft
- Fire sprinkler main line installation for second floor
- Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) rough-in at first floor
- East courtyard concrete placement
Work beginning in the coming weeks includes:
- Second floor MEP rough-in
- Window frame and glass installation
- Exterior façade
- Wall insulation and drywall installation
Modernizations of Existing Facilities
Work completed in recent weeks includes:
- Flooring and base installation
- Ceiling tiles installation
- Thermostat installation in buildings 3-7
Work taking in the coming weeks includes:
- Casework installation
- Grading of East Parking Lot (8th grade student drop off)
- Installation of power, low voltage, fire alarm
- Re-route of gas line for buildings 3-7
- Installation of restroom fixtures
Thornton Middle School Conversion Project Overview
Construction began at Thornton in 2020 with a scope that includes: construction of five classroom/lab buildings, construction of administration and library buildings, modernization of existing buildings, and various site improvements.
Construction is scheduled for completion in August 2023.
Thank You for Your Support
Our community generously supported the $650 million Measure E Bond in 2014 to build and improve facilities.
The scope of the bond work includes upgrading and repairing neighborhood schools by updating technology and aging classrooms; upgrading electrical wiring to current safety codes; fixing or replacing leaky roofs, aging plumbing and restrooms; removing asbestos; and repairing, constructing and acquiring equipment, classrooms, sites and facilities.
FUSD Middle School Conversion Timeline
Fall 2019: Walters Middle School welcomed 6th grade students
Fall 2020: Horner Middle School welcomed 6th grade students during distance learning
Fall 2021: Horner 6th-8th grade students returned to campus, Hopkins 7th-8th grade students moved to Bringhurst campus while Hopkins was under construction
Fall 2022: Hopkins Junior High campus reopened for 7th-8th grade students
Spring 2023: Information meetings will be held for staff, students and families moving
to Centerville, Hopkins or Thornton for the 2023-2024 school year
Fall 2023: Centerville, Hopkins and Thornton middle schools will welcome 6th grade students
