Message from the Principal
Week of August 30, 2021
Message from the Principal
Dear Virginia Lake Families,
Thank you for participating in our Parent Orientation event! Our students have been participating in practicing school routines, building relationships with their teachers and classmates, and reviewing the expectations at Virginia Lake. This week, all of our students will engage in the core curriculum in all subject areas.
We would like to introduce our new head secretary, Ms. Rosa Tejeda. Ms. Tejeda joins our team in the office with strong skills that will support our school community. She is bilingual in Spanish, an expert with technology, and has strong communication skills. Ms. Tejeda has a passion for helping others and building strong relationships. She has several years of experience supporting children in a school setting. We are thrilled she has joined our team.
If you have a change of transportation, please call the office at least 30 minutes prior to dismissal or send a note to your child’s teacher in the morning. Our staff is busy teaching, and may not see their email prior to dismissal. We want to make sure all of our students are safe.
The assessment window for MAP and Fast Bridge begins next week. Your child’s teacher can provide you with their classroom schedules. We will provide parents with the results of the assessments after the windows close. For additional information about the assessments, please read the information below that was sent from our district office last week.
We are working out the logistics of Sheild Testing and will inform parents of the official start date soon. If you would like your child to participate in Shield Testing, you may complete a form in our office. The form in Infinite Campus is closed, however, we are accepting additional students into the program. For additional information about Sheild Testing, please see the attached document.
Let’s make it a great week!
With Kindest Regards,
Patti Van Winkle, Principal
Ms. Rosa Tejeda, Virginia Lake's Head Secretary

MAP and FastBridge Information
FastBridge Grades K-1
All students in Kindergarten and first grade take the FastBridge assessment system in the Fall and Spring of each school year. FastBridge uses brief measures of early literacy and math at the Kindergarten and first grade levels. These brief assessments provide data on an early learner’s reading and math development. The FastBridge assessments typically take less than 10 minutes per student, but the data gained provides teachers with insights and suggestions to help address each child’s needs. More information about FastBridge can be found at www.fastbridge.org.
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Grades 2-8
Students in grades 2 to 8 take an academic test called the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). The MAP test measures each student’s achievement and growth in reading and math. Most students complete the MAP in less than 40 minutes. The MAP test provides our staff with valuable information that helps plan instruction and track student growth. Like FastBridge for the early grades, students in grades 2 to 8 take the MAP once in the fall and again in the spring. Please visit the District 15 website if you would like more information about the MAP test. If you would like to have your child practice the MAP test, you can visit the MAP practice site at: http://bit.ly/PracticeMAPTest. MAP test results from the fall and spring testing periods will be available to parents via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. These results are typically posted in October and again in June.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to offer concurrent learning to our in-person students if/when they have been directed to quarantine if they are deemed a close contact to a positive individual or to go into isolation due to testing positive for COVID-19. We will ONLY allow students who have medical documentation or have been directed by the school nurse and approved by the building principal to quarantine or isolate. Students that have been directed to quarantine and approved to participate in concurrent learning for a specified period of time will be given a device and a link to the Google Meet to participate in learning. Students on vacation, out of the country, or home ill with any other illness will NOT be allowed to participate in concurrent learning. They will be marked absent per BOE policy 7:070 ATTENDANCE AND TRUANCY.
