Strategy 1: 7 Keys to Connection (Source: Start with the Heart)
- Stop
- Look
- Ask
- Listen
- Smile authentically
- Connect kinesthetically
- Believe intentionally
#1-4 All go together The idea is to purposefully connect with individuals when talking with them. Stop when you encounter someone, look them in the eye, ask them a question, and listen for the answer.
Why? How often do we ask a question or have a conversation while on the run. Maybe we ask someone how they are doing in a hallway and keep walking, while talking as you pass by. Imagine, how it would feel if we intentionally stop and listen intently to what people have to say. This makes individuals feel as though they are important and valued.
#5 Smile with genuine affection.
Why? Students know when adults aren't being real with them. We want to show our students we genuinely care and are happy they are here.
#6 Make contact at the doorway (give kids a high five, fist bump-personally greet each student)
Why? Making a personal connection at the door with a personal greeting and a fist bump or high five, gives kids positive attention and it may even save you some instructional time. Doing so also allows you to see how kids are coming in-maybe you will notice they seem down and out, ready to blow, or excited. This is your first interaction of the day to say, I'm happy you made it to school.
#7 Believe in students intentionally. Find something in every one of your students to help you connect. It may be the thing that helps them to believe in themselves.
Why? Being intentional is essential when working with students, because often some of our students, especially our challenging students, may not believe in themselves. Even if it's difficult to find a strength, take a dominate character trait and turn it into a positive. For example, someone's stubbornness can be seen as determination.

Trish is also looking for volunteers to work a 2-hour shift at the store that day. If you are interested in greeting customers, handing out vouchers, and making origami bookmarks, contact Trish.
