What do you want for your children?
Many parents and teachers don't realize that the discipline methods they use do not help them accomplish what they really want for children. The first step in learning to be the best (but not perfect) parent or teacher you can be is to create a roadmap to guide you to your destination. This activity will help you be clear about what you want for children.
Following is a list of behavior challenges (Now) and life skills and characteristics (Future) brainstormed by parents and teachers in many classes. They are always very similar. How many of these challenges and goals were on your list? Are there some you would like to add to your list?
Use this LINK for an activity you can do at home with your children.

KG1-Grade 5: The Importance of Productive Struggle, Allowing Children to Struggle to Grow. Feb 2022
The Importance of Productive Struggle
Lucy Caulkins, from Teacher's College, addresses the importance of letting kids do their own work. She helps parents know that it is important to give kids opportunities to grow their own muscles.
Struggling is quite common, ‘normal’, a part of growing (and growing up).
When we see our children struggle, our instinct is to rush in like a caped superhero. “Don’t worry! I’ll save you!”
But this type of ‘rescuing’ only hurts our children in the long run. Instead, we need to let our children struggle and empower them to persevere. This is part of raising resilient children who are ready to take on the world.
Think about it this way…
Imagine you’re lifting weights at the gym. At the first sign of struggle or strain, a well-meaning bystander lifts the weight for you — every time you try. Will this allow you to build your muscles? Will you ever discover just how strong you can be?
No matter how pure our intentions, the same concept applies when we prevent our children from experiencing struggle.
So give them the gift of trying to figure things out on their own. You can still be there to support and assure them. One way is to use the effective scripts in this week’s Guide.
