ANALYZING STUDENT WORK
PRIMARY TEAMS
March 31st
April 21st
Primary Teams: Your team will decide on one subject/assignment that you all taught, and each teacher bring their class set of papers and switch with another person for analyzing the work.
The purpose for looking at student work will be based on these guiding questions and will be based on the Rounds Protocol:
1. Is the work good enough - does it meet our expectations for high quality work?
2. What is "good enough" and how can we illustrate good work for students?
3. In what ways does this work meet or fail to meet a particular set of criteria or standards?
Rounds Protocol
1. Statement of the Objective for the Lesson (1 - 2 minutes)
2. Discussion on what would be considered "good enough". (3-5 minutes) If there is a rubric, please bring that with you. Otherwise, you can decide in the discussion what "good enough" would look like.
3. Agreement on what is good enough is written and posted (1 minute)
4. Review of class set of papers (5 - 8 minutes)
**** Use sticky note
5. Round 1 (8 - 10 minutes) Each person states a general conclusions about how many of the class produced work that was "good enough".
6. Round 2 (8 - 10 minutes) Each person states the reason for their general conclusion about the work, i.e. overall, the work was good enough (or not good enough) because ...
7. Round 3 (8 - 10 minutes) Each person makes recommendations/suggestions for how to improve the work.
8. Debrief (5 - 10 minutes)
Intermediate Teams
April 14 (Math)
May 5th (Reading)
Math and Reading teachers will bring work samples from a particular lesson they taught. The purpose of review of student work is to look at students' understanding. The guiding question is what does this work tell us about how well the student(s) understand the assignment.
The video below is an example of the Protocol you will use for looking at student work. The steps to the Protocol are:
1. Overview of Goal (2-4 minutes) .... what was the objective for the lesson (bring any rubrics that you used for this lesson)
2. Focus (1 minute) .... what the teacher was really looking for or any concerns she had
3. Examination of work (5-8 minutes) ... team reviews work
4. Group discussion (5-7 minutes) .... teacher whose work is being reviewed is silent
5. Teacher reflection (2 minutes) ... teachers talks - others listen
6. Group reflection
