2nd Grade Meteorologists at Heritage Elementary
It was cloudy with a chance of giggles in the second grade classrooms at Heritage Elementary. For two weeks, students researched weather patterns. First they took notes on seasonal weather terms and activities, and wrote compare and contrast poems. Then they became meteorologists. They wrote weather scripts and video taped them. The forecast: clear skies ahead. At least in the second grade at Heritage Elementary.

Students rehearse their forecasts.
Madison 5th Grade Explorers Come to the Americas!
5th graders at James Madison Elementary School took a journey back in time to find out why European explorers came to the Americas. After researching Hernán Cortés together as a class, each group researched another explorer, mapped out their route and created a book about why and how that explorer discovered new lands. The students were excited to read and present their books to each other and to learn about other explorers. Thanks to Mrs. Felsch for teaming up with the DTLs for this project!
MyOn Books
There are so many resources for students and teachers available from Pioneer, Utah’s Online Library. Pioneer is now offering one more--a free trial of MyOn Books, an interactive digital library. MyOn Books hosts over 4,000 digital books geared for grades K-12. The collection includes picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, Spanish books, literary nonfiction, and informational texts. District Teacher Librarians have used MyOn Books in classrooms to research topics such as seasons, the moon, and natural disasters.
The trial ends January 31, 2014. Give it a try. If you like it, contact UEN to show your support to make it a lasting resource on Pioneer.
