Prepare your Classroom Technology for Summer Vacation
1. Backup files.
Backing up files on your computer is crucial to ensure that the beginning of the year runs as smoothly as possible. If you store all your files in Google Drive then you are all set! Google Drive automatically saves and updates files as you work on them and those files are available from any device where you have Internet access.
If you utilize Microsoft Office and store files on your computer, it is important to back up those files to your Z: Drive. The District provides each staff member with 5 GB of secure, networked storage. Any files that currently live on your computer should be moved to your Z: Drive.
2. Secure technology equipment.
When you prepare your classroom for summer, please secure your classroom technology by locking it in your desk or closet. This includes laptop docking stations, ethernet hubs or switches, and projector remote controls. If the Technology Department has issued you a teacher laptop, please take it home over the summer so that your work can be with you in case you need to do any preparations for the upcoming school year and use it for any summer PD you attend.
As always, if you have any issues with your classroom technology please submit a tech request.
Google Classroom Updates
- Digitally Differentiation: Quickly create assignments for individual students or small groups of students in your classroom. Students can only see assignments that are assigned to the whole class (this is the default) or assignments that are assigned to them specifically.
- Digital Literature Circles: When teachers assign choice novels for students to read, giving students a digital method to discuss their novels is crucial. Teachers can now assign discussion topics, assignments, and reminders to groups of students who are reading the same book at the same time. This will help facilitate the discussion and keep the digital learning space free of clutter for all students.
Seckman High School ELA teacher Natalie Como has been using this feature of Google Classroom to facilitate digital literature circles for her students during the 3rd quarter. Speaking about digital literature circles in Google Classroom Natalie said, "It's easy for me to assign specific questions to select students, and it also keeps work organized and accessible for them. This is an effective way to get ALL students to participate in learning through discussion and collaboration. My favorite part of this is witnessing my students interact digitally as a group, sharing ideas, and even challenging one another."
