A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT - WHAT'S NEXT?
STUDENT SHADOWING!
“I hear, I forget; I see, I remember; I do, I know.”
Confucius
As one of the fastest growing and increasingly diverse school districts in the United States, Irvine Unified remains committed to understanding the evolving needs of our students and to ensuring that each child has the highest educational experience we can envision. To that end, beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, our schools launched a student shadowing project that involves a teacher spending the day at school with a student to see the school experience through that student’s eyes.
Last year, we piloted student shadowing with a smaller group of teachers and we learned that shadowing can help us understand our students’ needs, to empathize with challenges they face, and to record observations and insights so that we can personalize and improve their learning experiences.
Every school in IUSD will participate in the student shadowing project this year. If your student is selected, there will be a pre-conference with your student to ensure his or her comfort level and a post conference to capture additional insights about the experience. A student can always choose not to be shadowed; however, we are hopeful that the students selected will participate fully so that we have the opportunity to understand their unique perspectives. If your child is selected to participate, you will receive a letter requesting your consent and providing additional information.
Should you have additional questions about the student shadowing project, please feel free to review the information on our district website: https://iusd.org/about/departments/education-services/student-shadowing-project or contact Mrs. Rutter directly.
DUE THIS WEEK! RESIDENCY VERIFICATION AND INTENT TO RETURN
Unbelievably, it is already time to start making plans for the 2018-2019 school year. We’ve had a terrific year here at Westpark Elementary, and we truly look forward to working with your children again next year.
First, to help us determine our staffing needs for the upcoming year, we need to project our upcoming student enrollment. If you have a TK-5th grade student(s), please fill out and submit the INTENT TO RETURN SURVEY as soon as possible (no later than March 2, 2018). It is very important that you complete one of these surveys for each of your children who currently attend Westpark Elementary. Do not complete this survey for your 6th grade child who will be moving on to middle school next year.
The second step, in addition to the survey, is to complete the required IUSD updated Residency Verification Form and Affidavit for your student(s). If you have more than one student in grades TK through 5th at the same school, you can list all your students on one completed Affidavit. Submit a separate Residency Form and Affidavit to Westpark for 6th graders. We will forward to the middle school. Please return the completed IUSD Residency Verification Form and Affidavit along with the required documents to school by March 2, 2018.
Directions and document for residency verification, can be found here.
