Ashaway Elementary School News
September 25, 2015
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
It has been a great start to another great year at Ashaway! Students and teachers hit the ground running, and have been working hard in Mathematics, Science, ELA, and Social Studies. We continue to promote our four school wide expectations (RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, HONESTY, and SAFETY) with all students. Every morning at our school wide meeting, I acknowledge three students who have earned a Cougar Claw Card for exhibiting positive behaviors in school. It is a great way for students to take pride in their school and their hard work.
STAR Assessments Replace Aimsweb Testing
It is the responsibility of our school to ensure that each student is provided with instruction necessary to become college and career ready. As part of RI policy, the RI Comprehensive Literacy Plan, provides a framework for us to carry out our work in literacy and mathematics, specifically our Response to Intervention system. Over the past 8-9 years, Chariho has been implementing a screening tool called Aimsweb, a thermometer check for reading and math achievement. At this point, Aimsweb no longer served our need, so we researched new tools. All elementary schools and our middle school chose STAR, which is the tool CHS has been using. Teachers were trained how to use STAR over the summer. Students began these online assessments, one in reading and one in math. It takes less than 20 minutes/ student in both areas. Students receive scaled scores, which are calculated based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct responses. We receive instant data about your child’s reading and math achievement levels which will help us better understand your child as readers and mathematicians. It is important to note that this assessment is like a thermometer check to help us identify students who may need additional supports, whether it be working with a math specialists or as part of the everyday curriculum. It has been very successful and students worked hard! Thanks for your support.
Evacuation Drill - September 29, 2015
On Tuesday, September 29, we will conduct a practice evacuation drill. Students will evacuate the school to a secondary location per our Emergency Operations Plan. Students will be told ahead of time about the drill and will have time to discuss questions with their teachers.
SIT - School Improvement Team
Our first School Improvement Team meeting will take place on October 2 at 8:00 AM in the school library. Parents are welcome to attend.
Spirit Day Fundraiser
Next Thursday, October 1 will be our first Spirit Day event. The original notice that was sent out was asking for a donation to support new playground equipment. The PTO and myself have decided to seek other options to raise funds for a new playground. Students are encouraged to participate in Spirit Day if they like, without having to bring in a monetary donation.
PTO
I would like to thank Dr. Lisa Manlove, the PTO, and all students and family members who cleaned up the school garden on Saturday, September 19th. The beds were cleaned, new mulch was applied, and rain barrels were fixed to the garden shed. A fall crop of tasty vegetables was also planted, before everything goes dormant for the winter.
